A half-Danish, half-German woman grows up in the midst of World War II before leaving Europe for America in this debut memoir. Born to a Danish mother and a German father in 1938 Berlin, Farrin's earliest memories include her mother's severe warning: "Don't say anything to anyone at any time." Later, she remembers their apartment being destroyed by a bomb in 1943. After the author's father went missing in the war, her mother took her, her little sister, Irene, and a baby brother affected by Down syndrome, Jurgen, to Denmark. There, they slowly adjusted to living the subtle stigma of their German connections until their mother found a new community in the Mormon Church. The fifteen-year-old author's mother soon secured visas and passage to America, and the teen's life was drastically changed yet again after they arrived in Salt Lake City. They eventually settled in California, living in a small cottage just off Hollywood Boulevard. Farrin's reluctance about America later gave way to ambition; she attended Stanford University and met her future husband, Jim. Together, they raised five children in nine different foreign cities. Although the daily trials of life as a foreigner and immigrant weighed on the author throughout her life, she continued to derive strength from her faith and her fiercely determined mother. She ably relates the complex character of her mother, and her account of her strange symbiosis with Mutti is equally engaging. Anyone with an interest in history or immigrant experiences will still find Farrin's tale to be thrilling. Kirkus Review

In his engaging study, Thomas Saunders explores an outstanding example of one of the most important cultural developments of this century: global Americanization through the motion picture. The invasion of Germany by American films, which began in 1921 with overlapping waves of sensationalist serials, slapstick shorts, society pictures, and historical epics, initiated a decade of cultural collision and accommodation. On the one hand it fueled an impassioned debate about the properties of cinema and the specter of wholesale Americanization. On the other hand it spawned unprecedented levels of cooperation and exchange. Lars von Trier built a reputation as a provocateur from the start—but in the late 2000s, he entered an even more inflammatory phase. Amid Cannes controversies, Antichrist (2009), Melancholia (2011), Nymphomaniac (2013–14), and The House That Jack Built (2018) brandished the cinematic virtuosity von Trier once banned under the Dogme 95 Manifesto while subjecting audiences to “extreme” cinema. Following von Trier’s experience of clinical depression in 2006 and 2007, these films took an aggressively personal and retrospective turn against the backdrop of the director’s controversy-courting public appearances. Playing against widespread assumptions, Linda Badley takes a reparative approach, offering an in-depth examination of these four films and the contexts that produced them. Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.

The first Latin American actor to become a superstar, Ramon Novarro was for years one of Hollywood's top actors. Born Ramon Samaniego to a prominent Mexican family, he arrived in America in 1916, a refugee from civil wars.
