From Calculus To Chaos written by David Acheson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Mathematics categories.

What is calculus really for? This book is a highly readable introduction to applications of calculus, from Newton's time to the present day. These often involve questions of dynamics, i.e., of how--and why--things change with time. Problems of this kind lie at the heart of much of applied mathematics, physics, and engineering. From Calculus to Chaos takes a fresh approach to the subject as a whole, by moving from first steps to the frontiers, and by focusing on the many important and interesting ideas which can get lost amid a snowstorm of detail in conventional texts. The book is aimed at a wide readership, and assumes only some knowledge of elementary calculus. There are exercises (with full solutions) and simple but powerful computer programs which are suitable even for readers with no previous computing experience. David Acheson's book will inspire new students by providing a foretaste of more advanced mathematics and some of its liveliest applications.

BACKGROUND Sir Isaac Newton hrought to the world the idea of modeling the motion of physical systems with equations. It was necessary to invent calculus along the way, since fundamental equations of motion involve velocities and accelerations, of position. His greatest single success was his discovery that which are derivatives the motion of the planets and moons of the solar system resulted from a single fundamental source: the gravitational attraction of the hodies. He demonstrated that the ohserved motion of the planets could he explained hy assuming that there is a gravitational attraction he tween any two ohjects, a force that is proportional to the product of masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. The circular, elliptical, and parabolic orhits of astronomy were v INTRODUCTION no longer fundamental determinants of motion, but were approximations of laws specified with differential equations. His methods are now used in modeling motion and change in all areas of science. Subsequent generations of scientists extended the method of using differ ential equations to describe how physical systems evolve. But the method had a limitation. While the differential equations were sufficient to determine the behavior-in the sense that solutions of the equations did exist-it was frequently difficult to figure out what that behavior would be. It was often impossible to write down solutions in relatively simple algebraic expressions using a finite number of terms. Series solutions involving infinite sums often would not converge beyond some finite time.

Applications of Fractional Calculus to Modeling in Dynamics and Chaos aims to present novel developments, trends, and applications of fractional-order derivatives with power law and Mittag-Leffler kernel in the areas of chemistry, mechanics, chaos, epidemiology, fluid mechanics, modeling, and engineering. Non-singular and non-local fractional-order derivatives have been applied in different chapters to describe complex problems. The book offers theory and practical applications for the solutions of real-life problems and will be of interest to graduate-level students, educators, researchers, and scientists interested in mathematical modeling and its diverse applications. Features Discusses real-world problems, theory, and applications Covers new developments and advances in the various areas of nonlinear dynamics, signal processing, and chaos Suitable to teach master’s and/or PhD-level graduate students, and can be used by researchers, from any field of the social, health, and physical sciences

This collection of original articles and surveys written by leading experts in their fields is dedicated to Arrigo Cellina and James A. Yorke on the occasion of their 65th birthday. The volume brings the reader to the border of research in differential equations, a fast evolving branch of mathematics that, besides being a main subject for mathematicians, is one of the mathematical tools most used both by scientists and engineers.

This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples, and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.
