Cultural transmitters, or mediators, play an important role in the transmission and reception of literature. What is a cultural transmitter? What role do women play in the field of cultural transfer and transmission and how active were women in developing the profession of cultural transmitter? In this volume, the first in the series Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (CTaT), a select group of scholars from various disciplines from Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandinavia discuss the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective. The importance of the ideologies women cultural transmitters themselves entertained concerning the reception of literature is also investigated. The essays demonstrate that religious, political and economic structures played guiding roles in the lives of many women cultural transmitters. Therefore, they dealt with feminism and sociopolitical issues, sexual politics, the practice of translation (to earn money), the role of women in society and how women were raised, the position of women writers and critics and religion. Examples of other fields in which women cultural transmitters were involved include science and philosophy. Furthermore, the discusssion of the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective reveals that religion, nation, womanhood and entrepreneurship are important aspects to be incorporated into any definition of a cultural transmitter. While the focus is on Scandinavia and the Dutch-speaking region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the positions and activities of the cultural transmitters discussed can be 'translated' into other language areas and 'transferred' to other periods.

A Philosophical Anthropology Drawn From Simone Weil S Life And Writings written by Helen E. Cullen and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-23 with Philosophy categories.

A Philosophical Anthropology Drawn from Simone Weil’s Life & Writings situates Weil’s thought in the time between the two world wars through which she lived, and traces Weil’s consistent conception of a mind-body dualism in the Cartesian sense to a dualism that places the mind within a carnal part of the soul and establishes an eternal part of the soul as the essence of human beings. Helen Cullen argues that in Weil’s early conception of human nature, her Cartesian conception of perception already shows a glimpse of the eternal. Weil’s dualistic conception also forms the basis of her political analysis of the left of her time, and through working in factories and in the fields, she develops a conception of labour as a theory of “action” and “work with a method.” Weil was influenced by leading thinkers of her time, prompting her to do an analysis of current scientific theories. Cullen argues that Weil’s analysis of Christianity, already present in Greek philosophy, shows us a theory of “identical thought” inherited from the East (India and China) and brought forth by peoples around Israel. This theory leads to Weil’s analysis, developed in The Need for Roots, of how we’ve been uprooted through colonization and how we can grow roots in a free local society (both rural and urban).

Literary Prizes and Cultural Transfer addresses the multilevel nature of literary and translation prizes, with the aim of expanding our knowledge about them as an international and transnational phenomenon. The contributions to this book analyse the social, institutional, and ideological functions of such prizes. This volume not only looks at famous prizes and celebrities but also lesser known prizes in more peripheral language areas and regions, with a special focus on cultural transmitters and their networks, which play a decisive role in the award industry. Cultural transfer and translations are at the heart of this book and this approach adds a new dimension to the study of literary and translation prizes. The contributions reveal the diverse ways in which a cultural transfer approach enhances the study of literary prizes, presenting the state of the art regarding recent developments in the field. Articles with a broader scope discuss definitions, concepts, and methods, while other contributions deal with specific case studies. A variety of theoretical and methodological approaches are explored, applying field theory, network analysis, comparative literature, and cultural transfer studies. By providing multiple perspectives on the literary prize, this volume aims to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of this intriguing phenomenon.

Battles and Borders. Perspectives on Cultural Transmission and Literature in Minor Language Areas is about literature on the fringes of Europe. The authors all discuss the often unique ways in which literary history and cultural transfer function in peripheral and central regions against the background of shifting national borders in the last two centuries. Special attention is paid to minority and migrant groups in Northwest Europe. The present volume aims to prompt a reconsideration of the concepts of ‘minority' and ‘migrant' cultures and literatures in the past and the present day. It also suggests a new topic for further study: the importance of cultural transfer for migrant groups (whether or not they form a diaspora) and their ability to create new words and to develop new identities. This seventh volume in the Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (CTaT) series is a spinoff of the research project ‘Peripheral Autonomy? Longitudinal analysis of cultural transfer in the literary fi elds of small language communities'. This project was carried out by scholars at the University of Groningen, Ghent University and Uppsala University. It started in 2006 and concluded with the publication in 2012 of Rethinking Cultural Transfer and Transmission. Reflections and New Perspectives.

Humble Women Powerful Nuns written by Kristien Suenens and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-15 with Religion categories.

Nineteenth-century female congregation founders could achieve levels of autonomy, power and prestige that were beyond reach for most women of their time. With a subject hidden for a long time behind a curtain of modesty and mystery, this book recounts the fascinating but ambiguous life stories of four Belgian religious women. A close reading of their personal writings unveils their conflicted existence: ambitious, engaged, and bold on the one hand, suffering and isolated on the other, they were both victims and promotors of a nineteenth-century ideal of female submission. As religious and social entrepreneurs these women played an influential role in the revival of the church and the development of education, health care and social provisions in modern Belgium. But, equally well, they were bound to rigid gender patterns and adherents of an ultramontane church ideology that fundamentally distrusted modern society.
