This open access book serves as a reference for the key elements and their significance of Klaus Hasselmann's work on climate science and on ocean wave research, all based on a rigorous and deeply physical thinking. It summarizes the original articles (mostly from the 1970 and 1980s; some of which are hard to find nowadays) and brings them in a present-day context. From 1975 until 2000, he was (founding) Director of the Max Planck Institute of Meteorology, which he made to one of the world-leading academic institutions. Since the foundation of the Max Planck Institute in 1975 with the now-Nobel laureate Klaus Hasselmann as founding director, the climate science in Hamburg has seen a remarkable boost. Various ideas were brought forward, implemented and tested. Many of them ignited interest in the global scientific community, thus adding significant momentum to the development of modern climate science. The participants of the remarkable development since 1975 have come together to identify these concepts “born in Hamburg”. In an introductory chapter, the historical development, including other significant developments of climate science in the late 19th and early 20th century are addressed. The main part consists of chapters addressing the development of key innovative concepts. These are chosen to describe ideas which have been suggested by scientists while working in Hamburg and have been taken up by the international community in applications and advancements (such as the stochastic framing of dynamics and analysis, adding carbon cycles to climate models, multiple equilibria in climate models, anomaly coupling, downscaling, and constructed proxies). These ideas may not in all cases have been strictly new, or “firsts”, but they were the Hamburg publications which made the difference. The book is mostly a book on scientific concepts and ideas, less so a general history of climate science in Hamburg.

It all began with Markus Jochum approaching one of us (HvS) – “when you guys are doing interviews with senior scientists from oceanography and related sciences, why are you not doing Walter Munk?” Indeed, why not? Walter Munk, an icon in oceanography, had just given a wonderful talk in a symposium in honor of his 90th birthday, sweeping a grand circle from his earliest work with Chip Cox on airborne measurements of ocean surface roughness to the latest satellite data – not simply a review, but the struggle of an active scientist opening up new perspectives – as inspiring and stimulating as when one of us (KH) rst met him at the Ocean Waves Conference in Easton in 1961 (Fig. I. 1). Walter immediately agreed to share with us his recollections on the nearly seventy years of his path-breaking contributions in a sheer amazing range of topics, from ocean waves, internal waves, ocean currents, tides, tsunamis, sea level, microseisms and the rotation of the earth to ocean acoustic tomography. With “you guys” Markus was referring to HvS and the various partners HvS had 1 invited to join him in conducting a series of interviews of retired colleagues.

Der Klimawandel wird durch anthropogene Emissionen von Treibhausgasen aber auch komplexe natürliche Prozesse beeinflusst, die sich menschlicher Kontrolle weitestgehend entziehen. Die Berichte des IPCC erzeugen einen wissenschaftlich und politisch ausgehandelten Konsens, in dessen Folge die regierenden Eliten suggerieren, durch eine CO2 Steuer das Klima kontrollieren zu können. Diese und andere Maßnahmen basieren jedoch oft auf unsicheren Annahmen der Klimaforschung. Klimaprojektionen der Zukunft beruhen auf Modellen, deren Fehler zu groß sind und die interne Klimavariabilität unterschätzen. In mittleren Breiten können interne Klimatrends anthropogene Einflüsse sogar übertreffen. Wichtige Prozesse wie die geothermische Erwärmung der Ozeane werden zudem in allen Modellen vernachlässigt. Daher muss sich die menschliche Zivilisation auf unvorhersehbare Überraschungen vorbereiten, da interne Variabilität zu erheblicher Unsicherheit in den Klimaprojektionen führt und die Kontrolle des Klimawandels verhindert. Klimaänderungen haben komplexe ökonomische, ökologische, geopolitische sowie soziale Auswirkungen. [SS3] Die durch Medien und Politik dominierte Meinungsmaschinerie ignoriert die Unsicherheiten der Klimaprojektionen und benutzt diese für regionale Anpassungsmaßnahmen. In den wohlhabenden G7 Ländern und der EU wird eine unrealistisch schnelle Umstellung von fossilen Energieträgern auf erneuerbare Energien angestrebt. Die Diskussion um eine Dekarbonisierung der Industrie innerhalb von Jahrzehnten ist kontrovers, da eine Versorgungssicherheit mit regenerativen Energien in diesen Zeiträumen nicht erreichbar ist. Angesichts geopolitischer Spannungen steigt das Risiko eines Atomkriegs wieder an, was die Diskussionen um verstärkten Klimaschutz und militärische Aufrüstung widersprüchlich erscheinen lässt. GKSS SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH The National Research Laboratory GKSS (member of the Hermann von Helmholtz-Association of German Reserach Centres) located in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, is engaged in environmental research. The main interest of the research center focuses on regional climatology and climate dynamics, interdecadal variations in the state of the Baltic and North Sea and related estuaries, and the flow ofheavy metals, nutrients, and other materials in river catchments to the coastal zones. This research aims at-developing an under standing ofchanges in the environment, both as a result ofinternal (natural) dynamics and as a result of anthropogenic interference. In an effort to dis seminate the results of these research activities, as well as to initiate a broad discussion among senior scientists in the field, and younger colleagues from all areas of the globe, the Institutes of Hydrophysics and Atmospheric Physics at GKSS have instituted the GKSS School of Environmental Research. Appliedenvironmental research has always containedanelement ofaware ness ofthe societal implications and boundary conditions associated with en vironmental concerns. Consequently, the School of Environmental Research adheres to the philosophy that all discussion regarding environmental change should incorporate a social component. This necessity has been well acknowl edged and is apparent by the incorporation ofsocial scientists into the series of lectures.
