I never wanted to be an expert on church splits. I never imagined that every church I pastored would have its origins in division. Yet, looking back, I see that God was preparing me for something greater—not just to lead congregations but to bring healing, order, and stability to churches that had been torn apart. Each church split I encountered was different. At Southside First Baptist in Kansas City, I pastored those who remained after a painful division. The challenge wasn’t just preaching and leading; it was helping people heal from the hurt of those who had left. At Prince of Peace in Peoria, I found myself in the opposite position—leading a group that had walked away from their former church. That experience taught me how difficult it is to build something new without carrying the baggage of the past. And when I founded New Cornerstone Baptist Church, it was another story entirely—a church born from division, but with an opportunity to create something fresh, something healthy, something rooted in unity rather than past wounds. Church splits leave behind deep wounds. Friendships are broken, trust is shattered, and bitterness lingers if it’s not confronted with grace. I’ve seen people walk away from the church entirely—not because they lost faith in God, but because they lost faith in His people. That’s why I’m writing this book. Not to assign blame, not to relive the pain, but to offer wisdom, healing, and a path forward for churches and pastors navigating the fallout of division. If you’ve ever been in a split—whether you stayed, left, or started over— you know the pain it brings. But I also want you to know this: division is not the end of the story. With God’s help, what was once broken can be rebuilt. What was once divided can be united. This book is about that journey. A journey From Division to Unity.

An upper-level introduction to the Christian doctrine of the Church. This book is a rigorous comprehensive introduction to the doctrine of the Church by taking the tack of walking readers through the internal logic of ecclesiology. Rather than simply offering a compendium of perspectives on each issue that arises, the authors seek to teach and model thinking theologically, with the grain of scripture and ecclesial reflection, about the Church. The chapters are peppered with two to three excurses per chapter which consider a particularly pertinent issue that arises from the doctrine's development (e.g. the move from Jesus to the Church, schism and the rise of denominations, sacramental mediation) or contemporary concerns (e.g. the question of other religions, contemporary ecumenical questions, the emerging church). While the overall tone and content of the book articulate and invite discussion on the problematics of ecclesiology, these excurses will provide ample opportunity to examine and (where appropriate) untangle ecclesiological knots. Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers, and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

The 20th and 21st Centuries have been characterized by theologians and philosophers rethinking theology and revitalizing the tradition. This unique anthology presents contributions from leading contemporary theologians - including Rowan Williams, Fergus Kerr, Aidan Nichols, G.R. Evans and Tracey Rowland - who offer portraits of over fifty key theological thinkers in the modern and postmodern era. Distinguished by its broad ecumenical perspective, this anthology spans arguably one of the most creative periods in the history of Christian theology and includes thinkers from all three Christian traditions: Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox. Each individual portrait in this anthology includes a biographical introduction, an overview of theological or philosophical writing, presentation of key thoughts, and contextual placing of the thinker within 20th Century religious discourse. Overview articles explore postmodern theology, radical orthodoxy, ecumenical theology, feminist theology, and liberation theology. A final section includes portraits of important thinkers who have influenced Christian thought from other fields, not least from Continental philosophy and literature.

The never before told true story of a group of multi-racial, multi-denominational pastors in a Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. Not unlike Old Testament times, odds were stacked against them in such an impossible way that the outcome would seem completely hopeless and utter defeat inevitable were it not for God. With division so deep within Gods church in the Crescent City, it could have easily sunk to its death in the flood waters, but when God appeared inevitable defeat became certain victory. Ordinary people began to accomplish extraordinary things. Miracles became common place and hope was restored. God had not forgotten The City That Care Forgot.

Jesus didn't say that the world would know we are his followers by our biting rhetoric, our political leanings, our charity work, or even by our knowledge of Scripture. He said the world would know us by our love for one another. Yet it's so easy to put others at arm's length, to lash out, to put up walls. Deidra Riggs wants us to put our focus on self-preservation aside and, like Jesus, make the first move toward reconciliation. In One, Riggs shows readers that when Jesus offered himself up in our place, he was not only purchasing our salvation but also setting an example for us to follow. She helps readers understand that they are secure in God's inexhaustible love, making them free to love others lavishly--not just in what they do but in what they say, what they don't say, what they will endure, and what they will forgive. Anyone who longs for unity in the church, in their family, and in their community will find in this book both inspiring examples of loving done well and encouragement to begin the often unnoticed hard work of building bridges with those around them.
