From Exile To Redemption written by Grace Farrell Lee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Literary Criticism categories.

According to Farrell Lee, a Singer story often takes the form of a meditation, with the dilemma of life and death the frequent core of that meditation. The protagonist seeks a source of meaning that might give significance to life; the human predicament is to be exiled from that source of meaning.More than other contemporary writers, Singer uses biblical images to confront questions of meaning, with the Kabbalah serving as subtext for much of his work. Singer secularizes religious material, equating the biblical image of a God who hides his face and the modern image of a cosmos empty of transcendent meaning.Singer is distinguished from other contemporary writers because in the midst of his images of secular and biblical despair shines a ray of hope. He sees value in seeking answers, noting that to find answers to the essential questions one must be redeemed from exile."

From Repentance To Redemption written by Jeremiah Unterman and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-12-01 with Religion categories.

The relationship of repentance to redemption in Jeremiah is a problem compounded of authenticity and redaction. From an intensive analysis of the relevant texts and a review of the secondary literature, Unterman argues that the dominant trend of scholarship is methodologically flawed and biased. The Jeremianic texts dealt with in this study represent concepts and vocabulary which influence or logically precede Ezekiel and II Isaiah, fit the historical background of the late 7th and 6th centuries BCE, and relate to, but are essentially different from, the literature known as Deuteronomistic. Jeremiah's thought on the relationship of repentance to redemption is to be understood from the historical and ideological background of the prophet himself. This thought progressed through three stages: in Jeremiah's early prophecies on redemption human repentance and divine mercy are equal factors; between 597 and 587 repentance plays a secondary role to YHWH's mercy; during the period of the destruction of Jerusalem the prophet's despair at the people's inability to repent results in the elimination of the demand for repentance, so that redemption would now depend solely on God's mercy. Included in this study are excursuses on the prophets Amos, Hosea, Ezekiel and II Isaiah, which help to place Jeremiah's thought in historical perspective.

Exile From Exile written by Nancy E. Berg and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with History categories.

The standard histories of Israeli literature limit the canon, virtually ignoring those who came to Israel from Jewish communities in the Middle East. By focusing on the work of Iraqi-born authors, this book offers a fundamental rethinking of the canon and of Israeli literary history. The story of these writers challenges common conceptions of exile and Zionist redemption. At the heart of this book lies the paradox that the dream of ingathering the exiles has made exiles of the ingathered. Upon arriving in Israel, these writers had to decide whether to continue writing in their native language, Arabic, or begin in a new language, Hebrew. The author reveals how Israeli works written in Arabic depict different memories of Iraq from those written in Hebrew. In addition, her analysis of the early novels of Hebrew writers set against the experience of "transit camps" (ma'abarot) argues for a re-evaluation of the significance of this neglected literary subgenre.

Until recently, discussion of ‘creativity in exile’ has focussed almost exclusively on a few European male writers, from Dante to Joseph Brodsky, who sought refuge abroad from political oppression. This volume, with accompanying 100-minute DVD, ranges much more widely, to examine the extraordinary creative endeavours in a range of media of men and women in almost every part of the world who, for a host of different reasons, have experienced displacement from their homelands. It brings together papers by academics, many of whom have experienced exile themselves, on topics as diverse as: the visual arts in Colombia, fiction by displaced indigenous peoples, convicts and slaves as exiles, writings about the partition of Bengal, the culture of Palestinian Americans, philosophers on exile, and the significance of cooking to refugee communities, which are interspersed with poems by contemporary writers in exile. The use of the DVD format has permitted the inclusion of: studio interviews with notable exiled writers from Nigeria, Cyprus and Bulgaria, extracts from two films relating to exile, a live reading of his work by an Iraqi poet, an audio and sculptural installation by a First Nations Canadian artist, and a performance by musicians in exile from Burundi.

Banishment In The Late Medieval Eastern Netherlands written by Edda Frankot and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Europe categories.

This open access book analyses the practice of banishment and what it can tell us about the values of late medieval society concerning morally acceptable behaviour. It focuses on the Dutch town of Kampen and considers the exclusion of offenders through banishment and the redemption of individuals after their exile. Banishment was a common punishment in late medieval Europe, especially for sexual offences. In Kampen it was also meted out as a consequence of the non-payment of fines, after which people could arrange repayment schemes which allowed them to return. The books firstly considers the legal context of the practice of banishment, before discussing punishment in Kampen more generally. In the third chapter the legal practice of banishment as a punitive and coercive measure is discussed. The final chapter focuses on the redemption of exiles, either because their punishment was completed, or because they arranged for the payment of outstanding fines.
