The Economics Of Modernization written by Keng Swee Goh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Business & Economics categories.

To many developing countries of the Third World, modernisation is essentially a vital strategy against centuries of poverty. For success to be achieved, the ethos of the traditional society and the old order must give way to new beliefs and values, which stress efficiency, law and order, merit through achievement, and a strong effective government able to put through difficult, unpopular, but necessary measures. This is the orientation and at the same time the unifying thread of the present collection of speeches by an economist who had borne prime responsibility for Singapore's economic policies through its evolution from colony to republic. Dr. Goh Keng Swee's speeches were made over the period 1959-71, a climacteric in the history of not only Singapore, but also the developing countries of Asia. Singapore's experience, despite its unique circumstances, may provide useful pointers to others. The title of this book notwithstanding, the speeches also deal with sociological, political, defence and other topics. Reflecting the prevalent issues then, these essays are an invaluable record not only of Singapore's progress towards a total, viable statehood, but also of the problems faced by developing countries in the 1960s. This re-issue is part of the Singapore Economics History Collection and features a new Foreword by Associate Professor Kwok Kian Woon of Nanyang Technological University.

Staging Growth written by David C. Engerman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

Situating modernization theory historically, Staging Growth avoids conventional chronologies and categories of analysis, particularly the traditional focus on conflicts between major powers. The contributors employ a variety of approaches-from economic and intellectual history to cultural criticism and biography-to shed fresh light on the global forces that shaped the Cold War and its legacies. Most of the pieces are comparative, exploring how different countries and cultures have grappled with the implications of modern development. At the same time, all of the essays address similar fundamental questions. Is modernization the same thing as Westernization? Is the idea of modernization universally valid? Do countries follow similar trajectories as they undertake development? Does modernization bring about globalization? - Publisher.

The Modernization Of China written by Rozman and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982-08 with History categories.

In the Modernization of China, an interdisciplinary team of scholars collaborate closely to provide the first systematic, integrated analysis of China in transformation--from an agrarian-based to an urbanized and industrialized society. Moving from the legacy of the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties to the reforms and revolutions of the 20th century, the authors seek reasons for China's inability to achieve rapid, steady growth during a 200 year-long struggle to modernize. They examine the changing shape of Chinese society: the role of the state in local politics; military affairs; economics; the development of the educational system; changes in family; population, and settlement patterns; science and technology; world views and foreign relations. And they make frequent comparisons between China's experience with growth and that of two other latecomers to modernization, Japan and Russia. The result is a book that brings much-needed clarity and perspective to our understanding of China, and the way a great civilization attempts to meet the challenge of modernity.

Taiwan S Modernization written by Wei-Bin Zhang and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Social Science categories.

This book is part of a broad examination of Confucianism and its implications for modernization of the Confucian regions (covering mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Singapore). It is mainly concerned with the industrialization and modernization of Taiwan. To help readers understand the process of modernization, the book provides an introduction to the history of Taiwan and to Confucianism and its modern implications. As far as social and economic principles are concerned, Taiwan's modernization is, according to the author, characterized by Americanization and modernizing Confucian manifestations. The book demonstrates that Taiwan has actually provided an important case study not only for the capitalist spirit of overseas Chinese, but also for possible implications of Confucianism for modernization. The unique character of this book is that in explaining Taiwan's modernization, it deals not only with economic and social issues, but also examines the philosophical foundations, an endeavor which no other author has systematically made before.
