* Published to accompany restored and reopened Handel Hendrix House museum in Spring 2023* This enjoyable book chronicles how this historic property in London shaped two very different musicians centuries apart* Richly illustrated, with evocative contributions by musicians, artists and historians on the influence of Handel and HendrixThis evocative souvenir traces the life and times of George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix - two of the greatest musicians ever to have lived in London. Handel lived at 25 Brook Street from 1723 until his death in 1759. It was here that Handel composed his greatest works, including Messiah and its ever popular Hallelujah chorus. His stirring anthem Zadok the Priest was also written in Brook Street and has accompanied the coronation of every British monarch since George II. In 1968, Jimi Hendrix moved into an adjoining flat at number 23. Here, in the only place he said he felt truly at home, Hendrix entertained, inspired and collaborated with other icons of British 60s rock music. Handel Hendrix House reopened in May 2023 following a £3million restoration, shedding new light on its famed residents, the great composer George Frideric Handel and rock legend Jimi Hendrix.

During his lifetime, the sounds of Handel’s music reached from court to theater, echoed in cathedrals, and filled crowded taverns, but the man himself—known to most as the composer of Messiah—is a bit of a mystery. Though he took meticulous care of his musical manuscripts and even provided for their preservation on his death, very little of an intimate nature survives. One document—Handel’s will—offers us a narrow window into his personal life. In it, he remembers not only family and close colleagues but also neighborhood friends. In search of the private man behind the public figure, Ellen T. Harris has spent years tracking down the letters, diaries, personal accounts, legal cases, and other documents connected to these bequests. The result is a tightly woven tapestry of London in the first half of the eighteenth century, one that interlaces vibrant descriptions of Handel’s music with stories of loyalty, cunning, and betrayal. With this wholly new approach, Harris has achieved something greater than biography. Layering the interconnecting stories of Handel’s friends like the subjects and countersubjects of a fugue, Harris introduces us to an ambitious, shrewd, generous, brilliant, and flawed man, hiding in full view behind his public persona.

Describing how the city of London helped transform a little-known musician named Jimmy James into rock legend Jimi Hendrix, this revealing volume details how Hendrix helped transform London into a dynamo of popular music and social rebellion. The book examines Hendrix's impact on London's leading musicians—including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton—and follows Hendrix as he acquires a savvy manager, a tight band, and a forgiving girlfriend and launches himself into a breakneck career that whisked him from dingy clubs to Woodstock and recording and television studios. Each chapter introduces unforgettable characters and takes readers on a trip through the psychedelic era, concluding with Hendrix's tragic death in a London apartment. It explores the public as well as the private man, capturing the contrast between the wild showman on stage and the unassuming guy behind the scenes.

"The time I burned my guitar it was like a sacrifice. You sacrifice the things you love. I love my guitar."- Jimi HendrixJames Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix was a cultural icon and arguably the greatest and most influential electric guitarist in rock music history. Mostly self-taught on the instrument, the left-handed Hendrix played a right-handed guitar turned upside down and re-strung to suit him. Hendrix extended the tradition of rock guitar, exploiting them to a previously undreamed-of extent. As a record producer, Hendrix was also an innovator in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas. In 2003, more than 30 years after his death at 27, Rolling Stone magazine named Hendrix number one on their list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time". This book presents Hendrix, the man, the musician, the philosopher. It presents his music, his shows, his song lyric, his life.

Born in the same year (1685) and the same country (Germany) as Johann Sebastian Bach, young Georg Friedrich Händel (the original German spelling of his name) was playing the violin, harpsichord, oboe, and organ by the age of eleven. Bach and Handel became the most famous composers of what is today called Baroque music. There was a major difference between Bach and Handel, however. Whereas Bach came from a family that had produced musicians for generations, there was nothing in Handel’s background that would suggest he would become a great composer. And, though Bach and Handel grew up so close to each other, the two would never meet. Throughout his long career, Handel continually produced wonderful instrumental music, including many great operas and oratorios which he produced for an eager audience. The most famous of these is his beloved Messiah. A private person, Handel left little information about his personal life. But we know a great deal about his music, which made a lasting impression that continues today.

The Indispensable Composers written by Anthony Tommasini and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-06 with Music categories.

An exploration into the question of greatness from the Chief Classical Music Critic of the New York Times When he began to listen to the great works of classical music as a child, Anthony Tommasini had many questions. Why did a particular piece move him? How did the music work? Over time, he realized that his passion for this music was not enough. He needed to understand it. Take Bach, for starters. Who was he? How does one account for his music and its unshakeable hold on us today? As a critic, Tommasini has devoted particular attention to living composers and overlooked repertory. But, like all classical music lovers, the canon has remained central for him. In 2011, in his role as the Chief Classical Music Critic for the New York Times, he wrote a popular series in which he somewhat cheekily set out to determine the all-time top ten composers. Inviting input from readers, Tommasini wrestled with questions of greatness. Readers joined the exercise in droves. Some railed against classical music’s obsession with greatness but then raged when Mahler was left off the final list. This intellectual game reminded them why they loved music in the first place. Now in THE INDISPENSABLE COMPOSERS, Tommasini offers his own personal guide to the canon--and what greatness really means in classical music. What does it mean to be canonical now? Who gets to say? And do we have enough perspective on the 20th century to even begin assessing it? To make his case, Tommasini draws on elements of biography, the anxiety of influence, the composer's relationships with colleagues, and shifting attitudes toward a composer's work over time. Because he has spent his life contemplating these titans, Tommasini shares impressions from performances he has heard or given or moments when his own biography proves revealing. As he argues for his particular pantheon of indispensable composers, Anthony Tommasini provides a masterclass in what to listen for and how to understand what music does to us.
