Engramma214 presents the results of a new season of studies focused on the archaeology of thermal sites. The narrative of this first volum emerges ancient votive religion with thermal medicine in context and follows a chronological and spatial order. Different papers address the preliminary results of the excavation at Bagno Grande in San Casciano dei Bagni (Italy) (Jean Turfa; Emanuele Mariotti; Edoardo Vanni; Mattia Bischeri). This case study becomes an input to revise past and forgotten excavations in Tuscany (Jacopo Tabolli, Debora Barbagli, Cesare Felici; Marco Pacifici) and to reconsider the votive role of bodies in ancient sanctuaries (Olivier de Cazanove). From Etruscan to Roman, papers discuss places, objects and written evidence (Maddalena Bassani), with a focus on the Euganean area both under the perspective of archaeologists and architects (Maddalena Bassani, Maria Elena De Venanzi) and biologists and medical doctors (Fabrizio Caldara, Antonio Chiappetta, Pietro Scimemi). The article by Silvia González-Soutelo and Laura García-Juan proposes abroad methodological approach to the study of thermo-mineral sites between Antiquity and the present day. Back to San Casciano dei Bagni, the last part of the volume presents the encountering of the thermo-mineral spring of Bagno Grande in the design of the exhibition at the Archaeological National Museum of Naples (Massimo Osanna, Jacopo Tabolli).

The papers in this volume, which have sprung from collaboration between archaeologists and seismologists, investigate the social, historical and physical effects of ancient earthquakes. Sites where archaeological and historical evidence of palaeoseismic events is investigated include Mycenae, Late Helladic III Kynos, 13th century BC Tiryns and Late Minoan Crete. Others adopt a scientific approach to the effects of earthquakes such as the uplift of Greek coastal sites, the disappearance of Dioscuria and Sebastopolis in Colchis and the collapse of the Mycenaean palace system.

Kniha přináší přes čtyřicet příspěvků mezinárodního kolektivu autorů a jejím záměrem je především shromáždit a popsat střípky předchozích, zapomenutých způsobů života. Lidský život a evoluce překlenuje různé historické epochy i místa, osud člověka se však zdá neúprosný, protože svědkové, vzpomínky i hmatatelné důkazy lidské existence se nevyhnutelně vytrácejí. Kniha současně odráží výsledky široké, mezinárodní spolupráce Jiřího A. Svobody, významného vědce, s autory příspěvků, včetně těch, kteří se jeho dílem inspirují.

This book on the current state of knowledge of submarine geomorphology aims to achieve the goals of the Submarine Geomorphology working group, set up in 2013, by establishing submarine geomorphology as a field of research, disseminating its concepts and techniques among earth scientists and professionals, and encouraging students to develop their skills and knowledge in this field. Editors have invited 30 experts from around the world to contribute chapters to this book, which is divided into 4 sections – (i) Introduction & history, (ii) Data & methods, (ii) Submarine landforms & processes and (iv) Conclusions & future directions. Each chapter provides a review of a topic, establishes the state-of-the-art, identifies the key research questions that need to be addressed, and delineates a strategy on how to achieve this. Submarine geomorphology is a priority for many research institutions, government authorities and industries globally. The book is useful for undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals with limited training in this field.

Modern seismology has faced new challenges in the study of earthquakes and their physical characteristics. This volume is dedicated to the use of new approaches and presents a state of the art in historical seismology. Selected historical and recent earthquakes are chosen to document and constrain related seismic parameters using updated methodologies in the macroseismic analysis, field observations of damage distribution and tectonic effects, and modelling of seismic waveforms. A critical re-evaluation of historical accounts and early seismograms provides us with the basis for a realistic seismic hazard assessment. This book is dedicated to the memory of Jean Vogt (1929 - 2005). Audience: This book is of value to seismologists, earthquake geologists, engineering seismologists, earth scientists and historians of catastrophes.
