What if Mr. Darcy's cold manner and taciturn disposition were not the consequence of abominable pride but instead a painful reluctance to place his trust in those deserving of it, as a result of his own disappointments? Bestowing trust in those who are worthy is a theme woven throughout this Pride and Prejudice variation. The fortunes of the Bennet family are raised with the receipt of an inheritance, a small estate by the name of Fairhurst in Derbyshire near the market town of Lambton, which is left to Elizabeth due to her father's preference and influence. After being so singled out, Elizabeth must travel there with her friend, Miss Charlotte Lucas, as her companion, so that the land and legacy of the estate can be used to benefit her sisters. Mr. Bennet warns his daughter that, as a woman of property, she will be an object of prey to unworthy gentlemen and to be on her guard against compromise or any thoughts of matrimony. While contending with her new responsibilities as well as an uncooperative trustee, Elizabeth finds herself in need of the assistance of the local magistrate, whom she mistakenly assumes is Mr. Darcy of Pemberley. Mr. Darcy, we quickly come to learn, is a man who has been disappointed by his misplaced trust in others; both mistakenly bestowing and withholding it to disastrous effect. Elizabeth makes the acquaintance of Mr. and Miss Darcy, whose positions in society, though as superior to the Bennets' as ever, do not appear to make them happy. At Mr. Darcy's request, Elizabeth intervenes with Miss Darcy and discovers that the Darcys lack trust in others as well as in one another after being betrayed by a family friend. In bringing about a reconciliation between Mr. Darcy and his sister, Elizabeth finds the gentleman quite different than he appears, and a tender but unacknowledged attachment begins to form between them. But Mr. Darcy repeats the mistakes he made with his sister and never corrects Elizabeth's misapprehensions as to who is the magistrate of her parish or the name of the Darcy family's former friend. Suspecting Mr. Darcy is in love with Elizabeth, Charlotte portrays her friend in a favourable light, but Elizabeth counteracts her efforts. At first in denial of Mr. Darcy's attentions and her growing admiration for him, Elizabeth discloses that her family is eccentric, improper, and without fashionable connections. Now Mr. Darcy must decide on his intentions towards the spirited young heiress. His pursuit of her is awkwardly done; he wishes to spend time with her but without raising her expectations or compromising his honour and he sometimes does precisely that when he oversteps the bounds of propriety. Having finally found a tenant for Fairhurst Hall and discovered her true feelings for Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth returns home to Hertfordshire with disappointed hopes while Mr. Darcy contrives how to see her again and at last meet her family. Upon reuniting with her family, Elizabeth makes the acquaintance of the inscrutable Captain Wickham, a favourite of her sister, Jane's. It is through the captain's information that Elizabeth soon learns the heartbreaking news that Mr. Darcy is said to be intended in marriage for his cousin Miss Anne de Bourgh. Can she uncover Captain Wickham's true identity before he causes as much trouble in the Bennet family as he did in the Darcy family? Can Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy learn to trust one another before they miss their chance at love? This is a full length novel of 110,000 words. There is no graphic sexual content, but there are sexual themes. The plot includes one violent confrontation, but there are no graphic portrayals of violence. This variation includes moderate angst.

A moving exploration of presence and place told through the stories of small-scale farmers who, despite intense adversity, continue caring for their land Love for the Land explores the power and potential of people-place relationships. Through clear and compelling prose, it elevates the virtues of imagination, affection, and fidelity—concepts promoted by farmer-writer Wendell Berry—and shows how they motivate small- and mid-scale farmers to care for the land, even in the face of adversity. Paying particular attention to farmland loss from suburban sprawl, rampant agricultural consolidation, and, for farmers of color, racial injustice, Brooks Lamb reckons with the harsh realities that these farmers face. Drawing from in-depth interviews and hands-on experiences in two changing rural communities, he shares stories and sacrifices from dozens of farmers, local leaders, agricultural service providers, and land conservationists. Lamb’s rural roots and farming background enable him to cultivate honest, trusting connections with the farmers he engages, yielding raw and powerful insights. Time and again, compelling evidence reveals that stewardship virtues encourage people to live and act as devoted caretakers. With a refreshing, accessible, and engaging approach, Lamb argues that these resilient and often overlooked farmers show rural and urban people alike a way forward, one that serves people, places, and the planet. That path is rooted in love for the land.

The daughter of Hollywood royalty, Chloe is determined to make her mark—and find romance. Screenwriter Jesse believes she's perfect to play the role of Esther, the woman whom his Revolutionary War grandfather loved. Will a love letter from the past have change their future? When Chloe is given a peek at the script for an epic love story, she decides to request an audition for the lead female role of Esther. The compelling tale, inspired by scriptwriter Jesse Gates’s family lore and a one-page letter from his colonial ancestor, just might break her out of this career-crippling rut. Jesse would rather write about romance than live through it after his past relationship ended in disaster. But once on-set together, the chemistry between Jesse and his leading lady is hard to deny. Centuries earlier, in the heart of the Revolutionary War, Hamilton Lightfoot and Esther Longfellow fight for love. Esther’s Loyalist father opposes any relationship with Hamilton, but Esther must face her beloved father’s disapproval and the dangers of war in order to convince Hamilton of their future together. Hamilton has loved Esther for years, and on the eve of battle pens the love letter she’s always wanted—something straight from the heart. Set in stunning upcountry South Carolina, The Love Letter is a beautifully crafted story of the courage it takes to face down fear and chase after love, even in the darkest of times. George Leslie Mackay (1844–1901), the famous Canadian Presbyterian missionary who came to northern Formosa (Taiwan) in 1872 and preached specifically with aborigines in mind, is the subject of an interdisciplinary study by seven independent scholars interested in the nineteenth-century imperial project and Christian mission to China. Importantly, Mackay’s mission defies such binary opposites as East and West: the missionary a conduit of an earlier Scottish-Canadian spirituality adapted to Taiwan that allowed converts to appropriate the Presbyterian faith on their own terms; the mission field in which he operated a “biculture” of foreign initiative and aboriginal agency working hand in hand. Mackay’s ordination of aboriginal ministers, giving us the Northern Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (PCT), was a bold departure from the imperial, Anglo-Canadian, Presbyterian norm. So, too, his marriage to a Taiwanese slave-girl, Chhang-mia, and the arranged interracial marriages that he performed between select Chinese ministers and female Taiwanese graduates (which included his two daughters). Mackay’s missionary writing and famous autobiography From Far Formosa—a fine specimen of the nineteenth-century heroic memoir genre—is notable for its defense of both gender and racial equality, and despite its unmistakable patriarchal leanings. Mackay’s repudiation of Darwinism and belief in an early type of creation science therein also locates the so-called “Barbarian Bible Man” opposite such virulent, racist theorizing as Social Darwinism and Eugenics. He was a dentist not an abortionist. A relative unknown to most Western scholars of religion, Mackay is Taiwan’s most famous native son, represented on the national stage in 2008 as a sky god and Taiwanese animistic deity of supernatural power and political influence par excellent. Although a product of the colonial times in which he lived, post-colonial scholars who ignore Mackay, his life and legacy, clearly do so at some peril.
