Includes The First World War On The Western Front 1914-1915 Illustrations Pack with 101 maps, plans, and photos. An exceptional and vivid account of the opening battles of the First World War with the B.E.F.. Captain Hyndson was with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment during the retreat from Mons until the First Battle of Ypres during which he was wounded and invalided back to Blighty. In recognition of his bravery he was awarded the Military Medal in 1915. “As there has as yet been published no connected account of the first phase of the Great War from a Regimental Officer’s point of view, I have been persuaded to put into book form the diary which I began on the first day of mobilization and kept up until I was invalided home from the French Front in 1915. As far as I am aware, there are only three or four platoon and company commanders still living who went through the Battle of, and Retreat from, Mons, as well as the Battles of the Marne, the Aisne and Ypres. This fact has emboldened me to add one more book to the already enormous bulk of war literature. It is also my desire to place on record the wonderful devotion to duty and the sterling fighting qualities of the men of Lancashire Nulli Secundus.”- The Author.

Frederic Coleman, the author of what he calls this 'plain tale' of the opening weeks of the Great War, was a well-off American in the summer of 1914. Fired by enthusiasm for the 'righteous cause' of the Allies, he volunteered to use his - then rare - skills as a motorist to drive British Staff officers around the fighting front in France. During the next ten months, Coleman had a ringside seat for the crucial manoeuvres, retreat, battles and advances that formed the Western Front. Rubbing shoulders with Generals such as Sir John French, C.inC. of the BEF; Sir Douglas Haig, commander of 1st Corps (and French's eventual successor) and Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, commander of 2nd Corps, Coleman witnessed the great retreat of the BEF from Le Cateau before the advancing German hordes; the battle of Nery and subsequent fighting on the Aisne and at Messines; the arrival of the first Indian troops in France; the first battle of Ypres and the Christmas truce in the trenches. This book is a rare find - illustrated by some extremely unusual photos of the 1914 campaign, and written in a direct and vivid style, it will fascinate anyone interested in the vital opening campaign of the Great War.

When the British troops advanced into Belgium in 1914 to face the German foe, it was with a sure and steady confidence in the outcome. These same men trudged back, grumbling, along the same path toward France as the full weight of the German steamroller advanced toward the numerically small British Expeditionary Force. At Mons they turned at bay and gave the Germans a tough time, but little more than a check as two corps could not hold up two huge armies. As the static battlelines began to coalesce, from Switzerland to the English channel, the fierce fighting flared up for any advantageous town, and none more so than Ypres. The first battle of Ypres was a bitter, bloody affair which ended the German advance but at terrible cost to the last of the regular soldiers of the B.E.F. Along with these hardened professional soldiers went a handful of amateurs determined to help; these members of the Royal Automobile Club with their motor cars were attached to various headquarters to aid in transmission of orders. As the eyes and ears of the army, the two cavalry brigade were in need of the most help from the R.A.C. volunteers as they ranged far and wide. The author was attached to the cavalry during retreat from Mons to the first battle of Ypres; he admired and had grown fond of the men with whom he had shared much danger. His post enabled him to meet a great number of the high-ranking officers, and in his capacity as messenger would have been better informed than most. His book is excellently written and deserves reading and re-reading. Includes 15 maps and plans. “In 1914 the Scots Guards (Third Regiment of Foot Guards) consisted of two battalions, both in England and two week after the outbreak of war the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion was formed; this battalion did not go abroad but during the course of the war it provided drafts of 11,201 all ranks for the 1st and 2nd Battalions. The 1st Battalion went to France with the 1st (Gds) Brigade, 1st Division on 14 August and served on the Western Front throughout the war; the 2nd Battalion joined the 20th Brigade of the 7th Division when it formed in September 1914, and landed in Belgium on 7 October 1914 and also served on the Western front for the whole of the war. Losses numbered 111 Officers and 2730 Other Ranks; 30 battle honours and 5 VCs were awarded. In August 1915 the Guards Division was formed in France and both battalions were transferred to it, the 1st to the 2nd Guards Brigade, the 2nd to 3rd Guards Brigade. ...This book is set out in chronological order, and though the battalions were not in the same division during the first twelve months of the war their actions are not recorded under separate headings. Thus both battalions were in action during First Ypres and they both appear in the chapter covering that battle. Apart from war diaries, there are extracts from letters and other contributions from those who were there making up the narrative and the result is a plain, straightforward account. From time to time the list of officers present in both battalions is given as are the names of those who became casualties during any specific action.”-Print ed.

More than any other battle of the First World War, the battle of the Somme remains as the abiding memory of the appalling conditions, suffering and death of British manhood in the public consciousness. As the guns stopped their bombardment on the 1st of July, the waves of Allied troops walked toward the often still intact German lines. More than a million men in total would be killed, wounded or captured on both sides before the fighting subsided in November. Colonel Buchan wrote his volume study of the battle from an enviable position as a high ranking intelligence officer, having access to much of the detail from the allied side of the offensive. One of the finest British authors of the age, he also wrote copious numbers of books on the First World War, of particular note the 24 volume ‘Nelson’s” history. Author — Colonel Buchan, John, (Later Lord Tweedsmuir) 1875-1940. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London, T. Nelson and sons, ltd. 1916. Original Page Count – 108 pages. Illustrations — numerous illustrations and plates

Frederic Coleman returns to the front with the British Army in 1915 after his adventures in 1914, as recounted in his first reminiscences “From Mons to Ypres with General French”. Once again attached to the British cavalry, grand movements had ceased and the positional war of attrition, artillery and trenches would dominate from then to the end of the war. 1915 would see much hard fighting and the cavalry divisions would often be pressed into service in the trenches alongside the infantry. The early months of 1915 were a period of relative quiet, which allowed the author to tour and recount the devastated scenery of Ypres, St. Eloi and all along the line; he also records the effects of war on the civilian French and Belgian populations as he tours along in his car. However, as the year goes on, the Spring would see the second battle of Ypres and the advent of the use of poison gas. Hard pressed all along the line, Coleman paints vivid picture of the desperate measures undertaken by the British to hold on at all costs. An excellent First World War One memoir. Author — Frederic Abernethy Coleman 1876-1931 Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London: S. Low, Marston & co., limited, 1916. Original Page Count – xvi and 302 pages. [Illustrated with 19 maps] On March 21st, 1918, Ludendorff launched the massive offensive that had been feared by the Allies for some time. The target for their attack was the Fifth Army commanded by General Sir Hubert Gough; weak in numbers and even weaker in the lack of entrenchments and fortifications in the front line which they had only just taken over from French divisions. The effect was shattering, the ‘hurricane bombardment’ was murderous the Germans fired one million artillery shells at the British lines held by the Fifth Army - over 3000 shells fired every minute. The famous Stormtroopers, specially trained and equipped, attacked with skill and determination, bypassing islands of resistance, sowing terror with flame-throwers rushing towards their objectives. The Fifth army fought valiantly and suffered greatly and no less than 21,000 British soldiers had been captured, many still stupefied by the bombardment, and, much ground that had been bought at huge human cost during the Battle of the Somme, lost. However, the shell-holed ground of the Somme battlefield proved to be the best ally of the British as it slowed the German advance; starving German troops stopped to loot abandoned British supplies. As the Germans slowed the remaining troops of Fifth and the other British Armies stiffened their resistance and eventually the front was knitted back together with the aid of the French and American forces. It was to be the last roll of the dice for the German Army in the First World War, the last real chance of victory, almost a quarter of a million of their best soldiers fell on their side during March and April 1918. The Gamble had failed however and the Allies would turn back the tide a few months later hounding the Germans back to their own borders and final capitulation.

Includes more than 20 illustrations by James McBey and the World War One In The Desert Illustration Pack- 115 photos/illustrations and 19 maps spanning the Desert campaigns 1914-1918 “Written by the foremost accredited London newspaper journalist in the Middle East during the Great War, William Massey covered the war in the Middle East as it was fought against the Ottoman Turkish Empire, its German ally and the tribes of the region who supported them. He was aware of the hardships suffered by the British and Colonial troops serving in the difficult climate and later became a champion of those who fought there. He writes of the complete conflict from the battles in the western desert with the Senussi to Aleppo and beyond to the borders of Turkey.”-Print Edition “Mr. Massey, who was the official correspondent with our forces, was moved to write this highly interesting account of the campaigns in Egypt on being told by a colleague on the Western Front that the Army in Egypt should " come to. France to see what war is." He shows that the British, Australian, New Zealand, and South African troops in Eastern and Western Egypt had a very arduous experience of war, and that the battle of Romani in August, 1916, was a hard-fought and decisive victory, in which the Turks lost nearly half their strength. At first we were content to hold the line of the Canal, Leaving the Desert to the Turks. But this defensive policy involved grave risks. Mr. Massey reminds us that the Turks repeatedly tried to lay mines in the Canal, and once succeeded in damaging a ship, so that traffic was delayed for half-a-day. The true policy, afterwards adopted, of holding a line far to the east of the Canal, and then of clearing the Turks out of Sinai altogether, meant very hard work for the Army and the Labour Corps, but was completely successful. Mr. Massey describes at the close the remarkable little operations against the Senussi in Western Egypt.”-review in The Spectator 24th May 1918
