Another reason is one with which I fancy most Englishmen will readily sympathise - viz., the feat had never before been performed, and my first attempt to accomplish it in 1896 (with New York as the starting-point) had failed half way on the Siberian shores of Bering Straits. Captain Harry Willes Darell de Windt FRGS (9 April 1856, Paris - 30 November 1933, Bournemouth) was the aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak (Harry's sister Margaret was Brooke's wife), and is best known as an explorer and travel writer. His books were published under the name of Harry de Windt. Harry de Windt was the son of Captain Joseph Clayton Jennyns de Windt, of Blunsdon Hall, Highworth. He was admitted to Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1875, but did not take a degree, travelling with his brother-in-law from 1876 to 1878. He was married several times, his first wife was Frances Laura Arabella Long, sister to the 1st Viscount Long of Wraxall, whom he married in London in 1882.

Although his brief but productive career as a cabinetmaker in New York lasted a mere sixteen years, the French-born maitre ebeniste Charles-Honore Lannuier (1779-1819) was a leading figure in the development of a distinctive and highly refined style of furniture in the Late Federal period. A contemporary of the renowned master Duncan Phyfe, Lannuier, like him, made fashionable gilded card tables, marble-topped pier tables, bedsteads, and seating furniture for wealthy clients numbering among the mercantile and social elite of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, and Savannah. This volume, which complements the exhibition "Honore Lannuier, Parisian Cabinetmaker in Federal New York" held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in spring 1998, represents the most complete study of Lannuier's life and work published to date.

The elation of total victory was mixed with the abrupt emptiness of a task finished. While work on the Continent remained for journalists, it now dealt with the slog of the occupation of Germany rather than the blood and glory of war. Yet Weber shows there were many reasons to carry on after VE Day in this delightfully entertaining account of the hotel where correspondents were regularly briefed on the war and its aftermath, wrote their stories, had them transmitted to international media outlets, and rarely neglected the pleasures of a Paris reborn until December 1, 1945, when the Hôtel Scribe was officially vacated by the American military.
