From Physick to Pharmacology addresses the important, albeit neglected history of the distribution and sale of medicinal drugs in England from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. The social history of early medicine and the evolution of British retailing are two areas that have attracted considerable attention from academics in recent years. That said, little work has been done either by medical or business historians on the actual retailing of drugs. This book merges the two themes by examining the growth in the retailing of medicinal drugs since late-medieval times. The six academics contributing essays include both medical and business historians who provide an informed and stimulating perspective on the subject. After an introduction setting out the context of drug retailing and surveying the current literature, the volume is arranged in a broadly chronological order, beginning with Patrick Wallis's study of apothecaries and other medical retailers in early modern London. The next chapter, by Louise Hill Curth, looks at the way the distribution network expanded to encompass a range of other retail outlets to sell new, branded, pre-packaged proprietary drugs. Steven King then examines various other ways in which medicines were sold in the eighteenth century, with a focus on itinerant traders. This is followed by pieces from Hilary Marland on the rise of chemists and druggists in the nineteenth century, and Stuart Anderson on twentieth-century community pharmacists. The final essay, by Judy Slinn, examines the marketing and consumption of prescription drugs from the middle of that century until the present day. Taken together, these essays provide a fascinating insight into the changes and continuities of five centuries of drug retailing in England.

Excerpt from An Introduction to Chemical Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics in Relation to Chemistry Before the foundation of a science is definitely laid, many facts must be established, analyzed and correlated. In obtaining these facts many methods may be used and many fields studied. This is especially true of the science of pharmacology, the foundation of which rests on anatomy, physiology, chemistry and physics. It is natural therefore, in the development of pharmacology, that research should have proceeded in waves, during which anatomy, physiology, physics or chemistry, played the predominant role. The sequence of such waves may be due to the investigator following the line of least resistance or to the influence of a dominant character in the science. Finally however, such waves are spent, and new methods of attack are developed, often in a new field. The period of pure physiological methods in which changes in blood pressure, respiration or heart rate have been recorded, for the present seems spent, and many are convinced that chemistry now offers the most hopeful method for the solution of many problems of pharmacology. The changes in blood pressure, respiration, secretion or metabolism, after the administration of drugs are fundamentally due to a chemical reaction between the drug and the tissue. Physical changes also result, and it is often difficult to separate the purely physical from the purely chemical. The fact that we know little of the chemistry involved in many cases where the dynamic reaction is most pronounced cannot be used as an argument against the importance of a study of the Chemical Pharmacology. Rather our ignorance of such a reaction should stimulate chemical investigation concerning many life processes. The dictum of the great physiologist who said "Ignoramus, Ignorabimus," must apparently remain true, until chemical investigation gives the explanation. Offering a valuable resource for medical and other historians, this book explores the processes by which pharmacy in Britain and its colonies separated from medicine and made the transition from trade to profession during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. When the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was founded in 1841, its founders considered pharmacy to be a branch of medicine. However, the 1852 Pharmacy Act made the exclusion of pharmacists from the medical profession inevitable, and in 1864 the General Medical Council decided that pharmacy legislation was best left to pharmacists themselves. Yet across the Empire, pharmacy struggled to establish itself as an autonomous profession, with doctors in many colonies reluctant to surrender control over pharmacy. In this book the author traces the professionalization of pharmacy by exploring issues including collective action by pharmacists, the role of the state, the passage of legislation, the extension of education, and its separation from medicine. The author considers the extent to which the British model of pharmacy shaped pharmacy in the Empire, exploring the situation in the Divisions of Empire where the 1914 British Pharmacopoeia applied: Canada, the West Indies, the Mediterranean colonies, the colonies in West and South Africa, India and the Eastern colonies, Australia, New Zealand, and the Western Pacific Islands. This insightful and wide-ranging book offers a unique history of British pharmaceutical policy and practice within the colonial world, and provides a firm foundation for further studies in this under-researched aspect of the history of medicine.

This collection of essays examines the way psychoactive substances are described and discussed within late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literary and cultural texts. Covering several genres, such as novels, poetry, autobiography and non-fiction, individual essays provide insights on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century understandings of drug effects of opium, alcohol and many other plant-based substances. Contributors consider both contemporary and recent medical knowledge in order to contextualise and illuminate understandings of how drugs were utilised as stimulants, as relaxants, for pleasure, as pain relievers and for other purposes. Chapters also examine the novelty of experimentations of drugs in conversation with the way literary texts incorporate them, highlighting the importance of literary and cultural texts for addressing ethical questions.
