Weeks after the outbreak of World War II, Joseph Halpern's Polish town, Vladimir Volynsky, in what is now part of Ukraine, was annexed by the Russians. Because of his high intelligence, mechanical prowess, and athletic ability, he was soon hand-picked to be an air cadet. On June 22, 1941, Hitler broke his pact with Stalin and launched Operation Barbarossa, an all-out attack on Russia. Halpern became a fighter pilot for the Russian Air Force, serving the Allies in trying to bring down the Nazi regime. Later on, Halpern became a special forces commando; trained in martial arts, to withstand torture, see in the dark, hear whispers, disappear in a crowd, and kill with his hands. He was shot down four times, and after cheating death on many occasions (and receiving many military honours), following World War II, he founded the Herzl Orphanage, and helped create the Israeli Air Force. He finally came to Canada and was reunited with his parents he had presumed were dead. He went on to a distinguished career with RCA Victor and the University of Ottawa. Joseph Israel Halpern played a crucial role in NASA's Apollo missions. His initials, JIH, remain carved onto a battery that is still on the moon.

This is the story of a Photo Reconnaissance pilot in WWII shot out of the sky over the rain forest of the island of New Britain in the South Pacific. After 30 days alone he was found by friendly natives. Hidden from the nearby Japanese soldiers and later taken to the camp of a team of Australian Commandos who arranged his rescue in a USA submarine. He returned to New Britain in 1963 with his son, Dick, to build a school for the natives who saved his life. Today, over 400 children attend the Airmen's Memorial School.

NEWS FROM CHARLESTON It would soon be Christmas and Harry Kenton, at his desk in the Pendleton Academy, saw the snow falling heavily outside. The school stood on the skirt of the town, and the forest came down to the edge of the playing field. The great trees, oak and ash and elm, were clothed in white, and they stood out a vast and glittering tracery against the somber sky. The desk was of the old kind, intended for two, and Harry's comrade in it was his cousin, Dick Mason, of his own years and size. They would graduate in June, and both were large and powerful for their age. There was a strong family resemblance and yet a difference. Harry's face was the more sensitive and at times the blood leaped like quicksilver in his veins. Dick's features indicated a quieter and more stubborn temper. They were equal favorites with teachers and pupils.
