Identifying common rhetorical challenges across disciplines, author Hjortshoj explains how to accommodate evolving audiences, motivations, standards, writing processes, and timelines. One full chapter is devoted to "writing blocks," and another offers advice to international students who are non-native speakers of English. The text also offers advice for managing relations with advisors and preparing for the diverse careers that PhDs, trained primarily as research specialists, actually enter. "Do you wish to get better grades in school? Have you ever dreamed of being a top student? If your answer to these questions is 'yes!', then this is the book for you. In this book, the author shares his personal story about how he progressed from doing badly in primary school to topping his class in postgraduate studies, whilst dealing with obstacles like poverty and parental abuse. He also shares with readers the stories of other past scholars who won various scholarships. Unlike most books on study and examination techniques which are written by teachers, examiners, psychologists and other 'experts', this book is written from the perspective of the students themselves. From interviews conducted with these past scholars, we learn about their well-proven study and examination techniques as well as factors that either helped, hindered or motivated them in their studies. This, then, is one of the rare 'How to' books that addresses the issue of motivation and is generously garnished with lots of inspiration, for your success in studies, exams, and in life."--

"When is it the best time to publish?""What are drafting and freewriting and why are they important?""Do you need to be very knowledgeable to publish?""Why are some students more successful in publishing than others?""Why am I afraid to write?"These are some questions that you will find answers to in "The Graduate Student As Writer: Encouragement for the Budding Scholar." As graduate students, you may feel the pressure to write and publish. You may compare yourselves to peers who have already published. Or you want to improve your chances of finding an academic position after graduation. However, the process of writing and publishing is not straightforward and seldom discussed amongst students, leaving many to stumble along and figure things out alone. If you are looking for some heart-to-heart talk from one graduate student to another on the mindset, skills, and process that are needed for effective and efficient writing and publishing, this book is for you. This book simplifies the writing process into four stages: Drafting, Feedback, Rewriting and Editing. It maintains that a graduate student is not merely training to be an academic, but is also a writer and artist. It also addresses misconceptions about writing that can hinder your progress, such as thinking that you must have it all together before you can begin. This book is written with the graduate student from a Social Science field in mind, but students of all fields will find its contents applicable. If you feel discouraged that you're not making progress in your writing, this book with chapters in bite-sized readings will encourage you and give you insights into your fears and inspiration to uplift you.Chapters of the book include: "Writing as a Tool", "Begin Writing at Every Stage of your Graduate Studies", "Start Small Wherever You Are", "Fear of Feedback", and "Value and Enjoy the Process, Not Just the Outcome."

Suggestions and background information to help teachers use classroom currency to influence students' behavior and academic efforts are provided. There are five parts to the publication. Part 1 discusses the many uses of classroom currency in teaching economics content, for motivation, and in discipline. For example, if teachers find that something they must teach is so repetitious that the classic symptoms of boredom start to appear, they could set up a simulation wherein students work for an imaginary institution: a laboratory which pays them for properly identified or analyzed specimens, a language agency which pays them for correct translations, or a computer service which pays them for correct equations for story problems. A classroom management scheme based on an economic model for "Putting Scholar Dollars to Work" is described in part 2. A variety of ways for "Spending the Scholar Dollars" is discussed in part 3. Among the possibilities are purchasing classroom privileges such as pencil sharpening and trips to the bathroom, and shopping at student-run businesses. Part 4 examines "Three Pitfalls and How to Sidestep Them." Problems which often arise include theft and loss, fund pooling, and the charge of materialism by parents. The publication concludes with a discussion of "Making the Reproducibles." Scholar dollars can be personalized, color-coded or size-coded, and student-designed. Examples of different denominations and designs are provided. (RM)
