Kazakhstan has an ambitious program to increase its technological competitiveness in the global market place during the next few years, but achieving success will depend in large measure on the effectiveness of upgraded science and technology (S&T) capabilities. This report identifies important opportunities and limitations in the education system, research and development (R&D) institutions, production companies, and service organizations to help governmental organizations in Kazakhstan with strong interests in S&T chart the future course of the country.

Technology Transfer From Foreign Firms To Local Suppliers Through Backward Linkages In Jordan written by Taher Ata Alkhatatneh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with categories.

This study is an attempt to understand the phenomenon of technology transfer. The study examines the extent of technology transfer from foreign firms to their local suppliers in Jordan, and also investigates the factors that affect the extent of technology transfer. In this study, an effort was made to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of technology transfer to local suppliers, how foreign manufacturing companies are supporting their local suppliers, and what types of assistance are provided to local suppliers. Furthermore, this study has explored the obstacles to the formation of backward linkages with local firms. These findings are based on an administrated questionnaire to a sample of 223 foreign firms operating in Jordan and semi-structured interviews conducted with purchasing managers. A total of 93 usable responses were collected, a response rate of 51%. For the purpose of data analysis the study utilises descriptive statistics and multivariate statistics (i.e. multiple regression and correlation analysis). The results show that the overall level of backward linkages and technology transfer is low. A number of factors affect this transfer, including market orientation, experience of the firm in host country, ownership structure, size of firms, the level of autonomy granted to firms, origin of firms, and geographical proximity. There is a significant relationship between types of industries and the extent of technology transfer. In addition, the findings reveal that most obstacles to the formation of backward linkages with local firms are the lack of local inputs and the poor quality of the locally available inputs; in particular, the specialised intermediates and components. A distinguishing feature of this study is that it extends previous studies in understanding the phenomenon of technology transfer and the factors that affect this transfer. The results suggest that creation of backward linkages and transfer of technology requires the availability of local suppliers with good quality, sufficient quantity, and competitive cost compared to their previous suppliers. This finding, therefore, raises implications for future technology transfer researchers and, by drawing off backward linkages and technology transfer literature, overcomes some of the deficiencies of previous research relating to backward linkages and technology transfer.

The literature on foreign direct investment (FDI) has recently analyzed the nature of the firm's entry mode choice in a foreign market, particularly the choice between a joint venture and a wholly owned subsidiary. Most of these companies use Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) in manufacturing operations conducted in host country. Therefore this paper aims to measure the contribution of AMTs to a host country. A study of 1026 foreign-based companies was analyzed and results mainly categories under two analytical tool. The present research has used multiple regression (MR) models for determining the factors affecting to the usage of AMT, which are introduced by foreign-based companies. The result indicates some guide to the organization of advanced manufacturing technologies from foreign-based companies. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model also guided better than the MR model for prediction of AMT from which variables are better for the developing countries.

This volume examines how international cooperation can support implementation of domestic climate policies in developing countries. Six case studies explore the domestic drivers and barriers for policies with climate (co-)benefits in developing countries and show that international support can help to overcome these constraints by providing additional resources for incremental policy costs, technical assistance, and technology cooperation to build local capacity. Cooperation can also contribute to robust institutional frameworks and government policies that facilitate increased private sector investment, which supports low-carbon production and consumption. Any such cooperation has to be anchored in domestic initiatives - building on stakeholder support for policies with climate co-benefits. The studies also examines the important role played by policy indicators in successful policy implementation and how they can be linked to international incentive schemes. The contributions in this volume examine cases from institutional and national perspectives from across the globe and find that, with common but differentiated responsibility for climate policy, developed countries have to contribute more towards technological and financial support in developing countries.

This study focuses on technology transfer in the steel mini-mill industry. It identifies two central issues: how capacity is built and how demand is sustained, developing a three-dimensional perspective to bring into sharp focus the desirability and necessity of technology transfer. The three-dimensional perspective focuses on the changes in the marketplace for flat steel sheets, the responsiveness and sensitivity to these market changes, and applying the best available technology to obtain a high quality product. Prior to this study, technology transfer has been examined in a bivariate relationship, namely, how technology transfer contributed to the development process in developing countries and Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs). The framework formulated in this study showed that Japan was lagging behind all the steel-producing countries because, like the NICs, it imported the physical and organizational technologies that fostered its prosperity. Based on primary and secondary research, this study revealed that high levels of operational efficiency and sophisticated product quality were achieved through continuous improvement culminating in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) consisting of Real Time Process Control. On the other hand, the research also revealed that China based the improvement of its steel industry on self-reliance combined with judicious selection of foreign collaboration. The theoretical underpinnings of the crucial issues in this study led to the development of an interactive model of technology transfer based upon stock and flow variables.

This report identifies and analyses trends in the local production of medicines in developing countries and related technology transfer. The objective is to assist the World Health Organization (WHO) in its support for Member States in implementing the global strategy and plan of action on public health innovation and intellectual property with particular reference to the promotion of capacity-building for local production in developing countries. The methodology of research included interviews with a range of stakeholders, including industry actors, operators of product development partnerships (PDPs), government officials and members of public health advocacy groups; review of literature and Internet resources; and participation in meetings with stakeholder groups in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This report makes a number of recommendations. These are focused mainly on the role that WHO, working in partnership with others, can take with respect to transfer of technology and local production of medicines in developing countries.
