As a child during the war, I remember a wooden gas bus that took me as a "Kinderlandverschickter" from the farm to grammar school every Monday morning. I lived there in the town during the week, probably as the youngest room master. On Saturday afternoons, I drove back through Freiamt to my mother and brother in Ottoschwanden. When the war spread to the south, the grammar school was turned into a military hospital. We returned to Dortmund unscathed via detours. This was followed by periods of holding out in the bunker and major bombing until the Americans liberated us. All in all, these were experiences that shaped my life and would remain a constant source of motivation. You should never give up: there is always a solution, there is always a way forward.

Sarah’s Garden Quite by accident, Sarah King has fallen in love. But this love is forbidden, and could cost her everything she holds dear. Tucked into the majesty of Pennsylvania's Allegheny Mountains is a garden Sarah King has been nurturing for years. She never feels more alive than when she is alone with her thoughts and her Creator among the delicate rows of plants. But then duty calls her away from her beloved garden and into a world she knows little about. Grant Williams, a handsome young veterinarian, has left the city to open a rural practice among the Amish. Within minutes of meeting shy but feisty Sarah King, he is captivated by her. As their feelings grow for one another, Sarah insists they can never be together. Marrying Grant would mean being uprooted from her home, her family, and her community. Throughout the cold Pennsylvania winter, with her garden tucked away until spring, Sarah begins crafting a quilt that illustrates her pain. Can anything lasting blossom from a love that's forbidden? Lilly’s Wedding Quilt Handsome, headstrong Jacob offers Lilly his hand in marriage, but his heart belongs to someone else. While Lilly Lapp has loved Jacob for years, she wouldn't compete with Sarah King, the woman Jacob was determined to marry. But when Sarah marries another, Jacob spontaneously agrees to wed Lilly. Lilly divides her time between teaching the local Amish children and caring for her widowed mother who suffers from depression. Lilly's faith comforts her, but her heart still longs to be the sole object of Jacob's affection. As the days slip by, Lilly decides that hoping is too risky and vows to protect her heart. But God is subtly as work, and as winter turns to spring, their hearts awaken. The furthest thing from Lilly's mind is her Amish wedding quilt, a traditional gift for new brides. And the person she'd least suspect is the one making it. Like stray pieces of fabric quilted into a new design, Jacob and Lilly's marriage begins to bind them together in ways neither expected. Threads of Grace Grace’s beauty almost cost her everything. This new start is all she has left. When Grace Beiler was only a girl, she was married off to an older Amish man in order to save her family’s farm. Years later, she finds herself newly widowed and a mother to a young son. She has finally fled her sad past and plans to settle into a quiet life in Pennsylvania. As soon as she arrives, she captures the attention of Seth Wyse, the most eligible bachelor in Pine Creek. Seth is candid about his feelings for her, and for her son Abel, but Grace is determined to protect her heart. Her determination falters when her brother-in-law reveals the troubling contents of her late husband’s will. Seth offers Grace his hand in marriage, and thus a means of escape. But despite his having saved her from another loveless marriage, Grace is slow to trust her new husband. And as the months wear on, Seth wonders if he has made a mistake. But God is quietly at work in their hearts, and Seth and Grace soon discover that threads of grace bind them together in a tapestry rich in hope and love.

Winner of the 2012 Kerry Group Irish Novel Award The Cold Eye of Heaven: the stunning new novel from Christine Dwyer Hickey, bestselling author of Last Train from Liguria. Farley is an elderly Irishman, frail in body but sharp as a tack. Waking in the middle of the night he finds himself lying paralyzed on the cold bathroom floor. And so his mind begins to move backwards, taking us with him into his past. As Farley unravels the warp and weft of his life, he relives the loves, losses and betrayals with the darkly comic wit of a true Dubliner. For this is also Dublin's story, the city Farley has seen through poverty and prosperity, boom and bust - each the other's constant companion throughout his seventy-five years. Epic in scope, rich in detail, and shot through with black humour, The Cold Eye of Heaven is a bitter-sweet paean to Dublin and a unique meditation on the life of one of its citizens.

At 12 years old, Conall has already worked in the coal mines of West Virginia for two years. He spends his days deep underground with his faithful mule, Angel, carting loads of coal back and forth between the coal seams and the main shaft, where elevators take the coal up to the surface. One day a tunnel collapses, and his brother is trapped with others on the wrong side! How can Conall and Angel help to save them?Mixing archival images with his original artwork, in this historical fiction picture book acclaimed author and illustrator S. D. Nelson gives voice to the poverty, grueling labor, and dangerous conditions experienced by child laborers across our nation in the past, echoing conditions today, especially for migrant fieldworkers. Praise for Digging a Hole to Heaven "Nelson’s acrylic-paint illustrations are gritty and realistic; more evocative still are the historical photographs that appear on nearly every page. A useful and thorough piece of work combining fiction and nonfiction, with an extensive author’s note detailing the history of coal mining." --Kirkus Reviews

In the third and final part of The Divine Comedy, Dante recounts his journey through heaven, after the travails and torments of Hell and the arduous ascent of Mount Purgatory, creating a cosmology of the highest realm of creation which is astonishing in its complexity. In Dante's imagining, Paradise is formed out of concentric spheres surrounding the Earth, beginning with the Moon and ending with the Empyrean. Dante must traverse these ethereal regions guided by his beloved Beatrice, as a means of attaining wisdom, revelation and beatitude.Containing some of Dante's finest poetry, Paradise is an enduring vision of grace and a powerful allegory for the struggle for redemption. This dual-text edition completes J.G. Nichols's masterful verse translation of The Divine Comedy.

The Man Who Created Paradise written by Gene Logsdon and has been published by Ohio University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Farm life categories.

Gene Logsdon’s The Man Who Created Paradise is a message of hope at a time when the sustainability of the earth appears to many to be hopeless. The fable, inspired by a true story, tells how young Wally Spero looked at one of the bleakest places in America—the strip-mined spoil banks of southeastern Ohio—and saw in it his escape from the drudgery of his factory job. He bought an old bulldozer and used the machine to carve patiently, acre by acre, a beautiful little farm out of a seemingly worthless wasteland. This charming story is the purest distillation yet of what Gene Logsdon has been writing as a journalist and author through the course of some twenty books of nonfiction and hundreds of magazine articles. Environmental restoration is the task of our time. The work of healing our land begins in our own backyards and farms, in our neighborhoods and our regions. Humans can turn the earth into a veritable paradise—if they really want to.Noted photographer Gregory Spaid retraced the trail that Logsdon traveled when he was inspired to write The Man Who Created Paradise. His photographs evoke the same soulful yearning for wholeness, for ties to land and community, that infuses the fable’s hopeful, poetic prose. Seldom have words and images complemented each other so well.

Few, if any, of us can say we knew ourselves before being born or give details of where we were and how we got to come to earth. But such is the true story of Don Lucado, otherwise known as Donnie Lee. Despite being sent with an auspicious assignment by Jesus Himself, the road of Don's life took turns down alleyways of violence and addiction, meeting with blockades of rape, alcohol, and death--all the while being conversely buffeted and policed by angelic beings from both sides of the unseen. It seems that life's rapid twists, turns, and near misses needs divine intervention and the miraculous to avoid all out failure. Will this life that poses a challenge even for Don's guardian angel be redeemed enough for Don to accomplish what he was sent to earth to do, or will he crash and burn? This true story that often defies credibility is a testimony of the ultimate triumph of good over evil and makes one believe that at some point each of us was once God's baby from Heaven.

A killer targets New York’s gay community in this “well-plotted” police procedural in the Edgar-winning series (Publishers Weekly). Neil Hockaday’s on furlough from the NYPD as he attempts to cut back on the booze, but his new wife, Ruby, is going back to her advertising job after the couple’s trip to Ireland. Unfortunately, the same day she returns to the office, her much-disliked ex-boss’s body is found, killed in grisly fashion and wearing a leather mask. Meanwhile, some of Hock’s colleagues on the force appear less than interested in solving a string of murders in which gay men are the victims. Now the detective’s working on his own time, in cooperation with a private investigator he knows, to uncover the truth in a case that will take him everywhere from the Metropolitan Opera to the nightclubs of Manhattan. “[A] beautifully written series.” —The Washington Post
