Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Ringing Ears The Neuroscience Of Tinnitus written by Jos J. Eggermont and has been published by Frontiers E-books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with categories.
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a prevalent and often debilitating disorder with approximately 10% of people (incorporating ages from children to the elderly) perceiving it continuously, and in 1-3% of the population it seriously affects the quality of life. The most common cause of tinnitus is hearing loss, and its prevalence has surged as a result from the various large-scale military actions in the Middle East in the last decade. Recent advances have been made in the area of behavioral animal models, in the understanding of human brain imaging aspects of tinnitus, and in addressing the long-range changes in human brain connectivity. Furthermore continued exploration of the three major animal models of tinnitus: salicylate-induced, noise trauma induced, and resulting from somatic interactions with the auditory system has further delineated the relative roles of cochlear activity vs. central auditory system changes. Evidence for the role of neural synchrony changes in tinnitus originates both from human EEG and MEG studies as well as from neuron pair-correlation studies in animals.

Restoring Baird S Image written by Donald F. McLean and has been published by IET this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
Baird, a British television pioneer, experimented with video recording on gramophone discs in the late 1920s. McLean (a consultant) has restored the surviving "Phonovision" discs and, using computer techniques reminiscent of an archaeological dig, has revealed the images on the discs and uncovered details of how the recordings were made. McLean also restored amateur recordings of the BBC's 30-line Television Services (1932-1935), providing a glimpse at what viewers were then watching. This book helps explain this period in television history. Illustrated with historic photographs, it sheds light on the achievements of Baird, the development of video recording, and the definition and invention of television itself. c. Book News Inc.

In hearing impaired patients, neurophysiological measurements are becoming increasingly relevant for diagnostic work-up, therapy indication and treatment monitoring. Objective measures, so-called biomarkers, can help to assess the integrity and function of the peripheral and central auditory system. There are a range of different measurement methods and techniques used in this context. These range from electrophysiological recordings (either with conventional measuring electrodes or, in case of cochlear implant recipients, directly with the implant electrode) to advanced imaging techniques (including magnetic resonance imaging changes to alterations in light absorption when using functional near-infrared spectroscopy). We expect these biomarkers to facilitate therapeutic indication and counselling of patients as well as to provide monitoring tools during (e.g. during cochlear implant insertion) and after therapy (i.e. in the rehabilitation phase).
