Excerpt from From the Himalayas to the Equator When, however, a letter had been received leading, some months later, to the fixing of the original time, it proved impracticable for Mrs. Foss to go. My tried and valued friend, the Rev. John F. Goucher, D.D., President of the Woman's College of Baltimore, had long desired to inspect the work in India which he had done so much to promote, and it was my great good fortune to find him willing to undertake the long tour. He therefore accompanied me constantly, until our half year's journey took us entirely round the world. I could not have had at my side a more considerate and helpful traveling companion, nor a more intelligent and devoted student of missions. In these letters to my family, sketches prepared for newspapers, essays on special subjects, and public addresses, sundry repetitions were not only unavoidable, but essential. For this more permanent record they have been eliminated as far as practicable; but in a few instances statements are repeated for needful explanation. Excerpt from Travels Amongst the Great Andes, of the Equator The most opposite statements and opinions have been advanced concerning this matter. The extremes range from saying that fatal results may occur, and have occurred, from some obscure cause, at comparatively moderate elevations, down to that no effects whatever have been experienced at the greatest heights which have been attained. Allegations of the latter class may be set aside for the present, for the evidence is overwhelming that, from 14 000 feet above the level of the sea and upwards, serious inconveniences have occurred; that prostration (amounting in the more extreme cases to incapacitation) has been experienced; and that, in some instances, perhaps, even death has resulted through some cause which operates at great elevations. Excerpt from Supplementary Appendix to Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator I have already explained in the narration of my Travels amongst the Great Andes of the Equator the circumstances under which the collections were formed that are described in this Supplementary Appendix to that work. It is said there, and it may be desirable to repeat here, that, whilst it was my aim to secure all we might discover in the highest zones of the Andes of Ecnador, it was not intended to attempt to examine zoologically the lower regions of that country. The latter have often been worked by professional collectors, and they are easy of access, and can be explored with comparatively little trouble at any time. The loftier and highest regions, on the other hand, had not previously been examined; they offer nothing that is attractive to a commercial collector; they are more or less difficult of access, and they are, in consequence of the violent and rapid meteorological disturbances which frequently occur, well-nigh inaccessible to all except those who are prepared to remain for a length of time at a great height, provided with such equipments as will afford efficient protection against the inclemency of the weather. After our experiences in these elevated regions, I should call the work of collection in them one of the most arduous that a Botanist or Zoologist could undertake. Excerpt from Among the Himalayas The grandest part of the grandest mountains on the globe has, strange to say, no book devoted to it, except one that was written about half a century ago. Since that time, however, these lofty regions, on the rugged borders of Tibet, have become much more accessible. Roads have penetrated the mountain fastnesses in nearly every direction in the state of Sikhim, a Switzerland of the East, situated in the heart of the Himalayas, within sight of the culminating pinnacle of the world, Mount Everest. The worst torrents have been bridged, and travellers staging-houses have been erected along some of the chief routes, thus facilitating the exploration of these mighty mountains, and creating a desire for further and more general information in regard to them and their quaint Tartar tribes, than is to be found in Hooker's Journals. Having visited many of the less frequented parts, and possessing an intimate knowledge of the social and political state of most of the primitive tribes, I venture to hope that some account of my travels may contribute to the supply of this want. During the past fourteen years I have traversed portions of this region nearly every year, sketching, shooting, collecting, and especially exploring the customs of the people on the frontiers of Tibet, and of Nepal - the land of the warlike Goorkhas - where I lived in tents for four or five months of several successive years. Excerpt from Geographical and Industrial Studies: Asia We are going to travel in Asia, the largest continent in the world. It is larger than all the lands in the Western Hemisphere and stretches from the desolate arctic shores almost to the equator. Its northern plains are so cold as to be uninhabitable, and its vast deserts are too barren to support life, yet other parts are so crowded that there are more people in Asia than in all the rest of the world. The loftiest mountains on earth, the Himalayas, lie in the southern part of Asia. They are only a few degrees from the equator, yet they are so high that their heads are always covered with snow. Just north of this roof of the world are great stretches of desert land where for miles no life can be found. To the east and south are immense plains so rich, so well watered, and so fertile that more people live on them than on an equal area in any other continent. Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend.
