Between November 2003 and October 2004, after four years of planning and preparation, the Army's first Stryker-equipped force received its baptism by combat on the plains of Iraq. The deployment of the 2d Infantry Division's 3d Brigade challenged more than just the Army's ability to field a new type of combat unit or a new piece of equipment. It sought to showcase and validate new information-age technologies, doctrines, and organizations that could serve as models for the future transformation of the service's fighting forces. Testing the Army's very ability to make key cultural changes in the way that it trained, led, fought, and supplied its forces in the field, the new brigade would have to prove more agile, more flexible, and more deadly than its predecessors. This study explores the origin, development, and initial combat experience of this unique unit, the first installment of an "Interim Force" that would pave the way toward the Army of the future. From the training grounds of Fort Lewis, Washington, to the battlegrounds of Mosul and Tall Afar, Iraq, the odyssey of the "3-2" tested the very premise of the Army's initial Transformation strategy. This preliminary account provides a firsthand field assessment of that ambitious effort and should encourage further thought about our continuing efforts to prepare the Army for its role in an increasingly turbulent world.Contents * A Need for Change * Establishing a Process * Step One: Reorganize, Train, and Equip * Step Two: Fielding Stryker * Step Three: Operational Readiness * Step Four: Taking the Field * The Test of Combat: November 2003-November 2004 * Task Force Olympia * Initial Operations * Task Force Arrow: An Najaf * Operation Road Warrior: Baghdad * Tall Afar, Iraq * Mosul, Iraq * Relief in Place * Analysis * Bibliographical Note

Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), the U.S.-led coalition military operation in Iraq, was launched on March 20, 2003, with the goal of removing Saddam Hussein¿s regime and destroying its ability to use weapons of mass destruction. The focus of OIF has shifted from regime removal to helping the Gov¿t. of Iraq improve security, establish a system of governance, and foster economic development. This report addresses these policy issues: Identifying how U.S. national interests and strategic objectives, in Iraq and the region, should guide further U.S. engagement; Monitoring and evaluating the impact of the changes in the U.S. presence and role in Iraq; and Laying the groundwork for a traditional bilateral relationship. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States Army has been reengineered and downsized more thoroughly than any other business. In the early 1990s, General Sullivan, army chief of staff, and Colonel Harper, his key strategic planner, took the post-Cold War army into the Information Age. Faced with a 40 percent reduction in staff and funding, they focused on new peacetime missions, dismantled a cumbersome bureaucracy, reinvented procedures, and set the guidelines for achieving a vast array of new goals. Hope Is Not a Method explains how they did it and shows how their experience is extremely relevant to today's businesses. From how to stay on top of long-range issues to how to maintain a productive work force during times of change, it offers invaluable lessons in leadership and provides proven tactics any business can implement.

Surprise Kill Vanish written by Annie Jacobsen and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-14 with History categories.

From Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen, the untold USA Today bestselling story of the CIA's secret paramilitary units. Surprise . . . your target. Kill . . . your enemy. Vanish . . . without a trace. When diplomacy fails, and war is unwise, the president calls on the CIA's Special Activities Division, a highly-classified branch of the CIA and the most effective, black operations force in the world. Originally known as the president's guerrilla warfare corps, SAD conducts risky and ruthless operations that have evolved over time to defend America from its enemies. Almost every American president since World War II has asked the CIA to conduct sabotage, subversion and, yes, assassination. With unprecedented access to forty-two men and women who proudly and secretly worked on CIA covert operations from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day, along with declassified documents and deep historical research, Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen unveils -- like never before -- a complex world of individuals working in treacherous environments populated with killers, connivers, and saboteurs. Despite Hollywood notions of off-book operations and external secret hires, covert action is actually one piece in a colossal foreign policy machine. Written with the pacing of a thriller, Surprise, Kill, Vanish brings to vivid life the sheer pandemonium and chaos, as well as the unforgettable human will to survive and the intellectual challenge of not giving up hope that define paramilitary and intelligence work. Jacobsen's exclusive interviews -- with members of the CIA's Senior Intelligence Service (equivalent to the Pentagon's generals), its counterterrorism chiefs, targeting officers, and Special Activities Division's Ground Branch operators who conduct today's close-quarters killing operations around the world -- reveal, for the first time, the enormity of this shocking, controversial, and morally complex terrain. Is the CIA's paramilitary army America's weaponized strength, or a liability to its principled standing in the world? Every operation reported in this book, however unsettling, is legal.

The U S Army In The Iraq War written by Joel Rayburn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Iraq categories.

The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army's initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. Presented principally from the point of view of the commanders in Baghdad, the narrative examines the interaction of the operational and strategic levels, as well as the creation of theater level strategy and its implementation at the tactical level. Volume 1 begins in the truce tent at Safwan Airfield in southern Iraq at the end of Operation DESERT STORM and briefly examines actions by U.S. and Iraqi forces during the interwar years. The narrative continues by examining the road to war, the initially successful invasion, and the rise of Iraqi insurgent groups before exploring the country's slide toward civil war. This volume concludes with a review of the decision by the George W. Bush administration to "surge" additional forces to Iraq, placing the conduct of the "surge" and its aftermath in the second volume.
