An interesting and detailed explanation of the complete process of woodturning from freshly cut wood. Beginning with an explanation of how to safely harvest trees, the reader is taken through green-turning and sealing for the curing process, finish-turning, completion of their bottoms, and the final finishing. All the steps are illustrated and explained. A gallery gives many ideas of how to use the leftover and extra stock that otherwise would make its way to the fireplace or woodstove. This is great book for the environmentally conscious turner concerned about killing too many trees for woodworking. And all turners, no matter what their skill levels happen to be, will like the way it shows how to completely use the less-than-excellent stock to make many bowls and other turned articles for utilitarian use. This is definitely a "green" book in the best sense of the word.

Excerpt from Handling Apples From Tree to Table The blush, or red color, of an apple is not a reliable index of maturity. The ground color (underlying green or yellow), however, can be used as an index. The quality of a'red apple can be judged ordinarily by the proportion of red to green; the 'more red, the better the eating quality. As most varieties of apples become mature the ground color changes from a green very much like that of the leaves to a lighter shade and eventually to yellowish. The time to pick most varieties is when the first'signs of yellowing appear This is not always true with some varieties - Grimes Golden, J onathan, and Yellow Newtown, for example - when grown under certain conditions. The red sp orts of some varieties usually become fully red before they are mature, with no underlying ground color left for observation. As a result, they have frequently been picked too soon and have suffered in popular esteem because they were judged to have poorer quality than the parent variety. Although ground color cannot be used as an index of maturity for red bud sports, the ground color of the parent varieties growing in the same Vicinity can be so used, as their seasons of maturity are ordinarily about the same. CLICK HERE to download the chapter on "Growing Backyard Fogs" from the book From Tree to Table From Tree to Table celebrates the satisfaction that comes from planting and enjoying fruit trees in the maritime Pacific region. It's a collaboration between the authors and amateur gardeners, horticultural experts, and dedicated chefs from up and down the West Coast. The result is a charming and accessible guide for local plant and food lovers that dispels the myth that gardeners in sun-challenged climes can never find happiness with fruit trees With advice that's suitable for drizzly Seattle backyards and frosty Portland burbs as well as often-sunny Marin or foggy Richmond, the authors offer both anecdotal and expert advice for raising everything from apples to plums, lemons to figs, and much more in some of the most difficult conditions -- heavy soils, overcast and rainy weather, cool summers, and relatively mild winters. In addition to describing growing, planting, and pruning tips in each fruit-specific chapter, From Tree to Table features recipes from the West Coast's best and brightest chefs, including San Francisco's Tom McNaughton, and two Seattle icons, Tom Douglas and Ethan Stowell. Readers will discover that it takes little technical know-how, minimal upkeep, and very little space to participate actively in the sustainability solution. After all, what could be more local and enduring than fresh apricots or Fuyu persimmons from a backyard tree that can feed generations to come?
