In my last work entitled Life and Labour in the Far Far West, published in 1884, I described many places in Canada, revisited in my recent tour. I do not consider a repetition of the same facts necessary; and though in some cases I may be obliged to mention places visited before (for the sake of comparison), it will be as briefly as possible - Granville, now Vancouver City, in British Columbia, excepted. The new ground in Canada, over which I lately travelled, was a district recently opened up by the Manitoba and North Western Railway, through the "park-like lands of the Fertile Belt;" from Portage-la-Prairie to Langenburg, and by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from Calgary over the Rocky, Selkirk, and Cascade Mountains to the new terminal city of Vancouver. There is in them a note of eaperation which I would have wished to remove if I could. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Excerpt from To the East by Way of the West The Lamented author of this book died before its publication, so that it may be called a posthumous work. He was passing the last sheets through the press when his Divine Master called him from labor to reward. As the Letters of Bishop Marvin had been written at my earnest solicitation, and had been first published under my editorial supervision, and as there was a strong affection between him and me, the Publishers requested me to write a Biographical Sketch of the Bishop for the work - which I consented to do. But after hearing Bishop McTyeire's Memorial Discourse, which comprises the main points in Bishop Marvin's life, I thought it would be like gilding refined gold to write the sketch, as the Discourse was kindly permitted to appear in the volume. But this does not preclude a brief Introduction, which it affords me pleasure to furnish. When the General Conference of 1874 requested one of the Bishops to visit China, in the interest of our Missionary work, and when the College of Bishops appointed Bishop Marvin to perform this service, as the President of the Board of Missions, I heartily approved of the suggestion that the Bishop should extend his tour, inspect the operations of the various Missionary Societies in other parts of the world, and attend the session of the British Conference to represent our connection before that venerable body.
