Der Autor zeichnet ein facettenreiches Bild der Jahre von 1840 an: die Siedlungsgeschichte, das kirchliche und schulische Leben, die Arbeit und das Freizeitverhalten werden ausführlich geschildert. Weitere Siedlungsschwerpunkte sind Quincy, Illinois, Manhattan in Kansas und Grand Island in Nebraska.

It was the original forever war, which went on interminably, fuelled by religious fanaticism, personal ambition, fear of hegemony, and communal suspicion. It dragged in all the neighbouring powers. It was punctuated by repeated failed ceasefires. It inflicted suffering beyond belief and generated waves of refugees. No, this is not Syria today, but the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), which turned Germany and much of central Europe into a disaster zone. The Thirty Years' War is often cited as a parallel in discussions of the Middle East. The Peace of Westphalia, which ended the conflict in 1648, has featured strongly in such discussions, usually with the observation that recent events in some parts of the region have seen the collapse of ideas of state sovereignty--ideas that supposedly originated with the 1648 settlement. This volume challenges "Westphalian conservativism" in a provocative yet plausible manner, shedding light at the ubiquity and diversity of unfolding non-state agendas and at their effect on the imagined state community. Focusing on civil war parties, warlords, commercial providers of security, multinational companies and criminal organizations, the book directs attention to theoretical questions and policy challenges arising from non-state armed expansion. To accomplish this, the contributors present a range of case studies and comparisons within three thematic sections: the first takes stock of how, when, and in what measure state and state-system legitimacy are challenged by non-state violent or criminal activity; the second addresses the nature, effectiveness, and side-effects of different state-mandated reaction to non-state activities; and third focuses on the recombination of state and non-state actors contributing to processes of socio-political transformation. This is the first volume in a two-volume work contrasting two alternative world orders and assessing their comparative strengths and weaknesses and the chances for, and obstacles to, gradually moving from one to the other. Often referred to as the Westphalian system, it may briefly be described as an order of sovereign states, recognising each other as such and as a consequence thereof obliging themselves to not interfere in the internal affairs of each other. This volume is devoted to the darker sides of Westphalia commencing with wars and ending with genocide and other forms of crimes against humanity. As openly acknowledged by Hedley Bull, the fact that the Westphalian world system may thus enhance âe~orderâe(tm) does not automatically ensure justice or other human desiderata such as human rights, prosperity or personal security. While the Westphalian order did provide a growing body of international law regulating the conduct of war and limiting the right of states to go to war, as history has shown, these regulations have neither prevented wars nor really succeeded in tempering their conduct. The protective legal walls of the sovereignty/non-intervention norm have often allowed incumbent regimes to ruthlessly exploit and terrorise their own citizens. Proposals for a âe~sovereignty of responsibilityâe(tm) as an alternative to unlimited sovereign rights, whilst compatible with Westphalian rules, is better treated as modest steps away from Westphalia towards an alternative world order. A transference of responsibility elsewhere either to another state or world organisation, brings us to a more just and cosmopolitan order, the subject of the second volume.

This book investigates the relationship between the International Criminal Court and Africa (the ICC or the Court), asking why and how the international criminal justice system has so far largely failed the victims of atrocities in Africa. The book explores how the Court degenerated from a very promising multilateral institution to being an instrumentalised, politicised, weaponised institution that ended up with the victims being the greatest losers. Instead of looking at the International Criminal Court as a recent alternative to a prevailing international criminal justice paradigm, this book argues that the Court is a manifestation of the same world order that was established by the Reconquista in 1492. Written from a decolonial perspective, the book particularly draws on evidence from Zimbabwe in order to demonstrate how the International Criminal Court is failing the victims of the four crimes that fall under its jurisdiction. Drawing on the perspectives of victims in particular, this book highlights the damage caused within Africa by the international criminal justice system and argues for a decolonial conception of justice. The book will be of interest to researchers from across African politics, international relations, law and criminal justice.
