Janey shares how she got her break in the music business, the highs and lows of being a backing singer and what it was like touring with bands in the 80's and 90's. From being crammed in a minibus with Mari Wilson's band, to living the dream flying first class around the world, playing stadium gigs with George Michael and WHAM! Janey later became known as a co-presenter on Steve Wright in the Afternoon. Janey Lee Grace cut her teeth on the mic in the night clubs of Manchester and Birmingham and her first big singing break was with Mari Wilson and the Wilsations. After she was fired from the band for refusing to dye her hair canary yellow she was picked up by WHAM! Janey sang backing vocals with George Michael and Andrew Ridgely for all their tours including the infamous WHAM! China tour. Janey went on to tour/record with Boy George, Sinita, Kim Wilde and Natalie Cole and had her own UK top ten hit with Cola Boy and 7 Ways to Love - a dance floor sensation in the summer of love 1991. Janey moved from singing to presenting for ITV, VH-1 and Sky news followed by her own show on BBC Radio 2. After bumping into Steve Wright while she was a Virgin Radio Presenter, Janey became a co-presenter on Steve Wright in the Afternoonand regular stand in for Sunday Love Songs. She describes hustling her way into the world of radio presenting, both local and national - the pitfalls, the fun stuff, with lots of behind-the-scenes stories.

One day I took my daughter who was about seven, for a walk on the trails at the Back Bay in Portland, Maine. She was committed to walking the entire way around the bay, which is about six miles. Then about four miles into the walk she wanted to stop. There was really no way to do so. Instead her cleaver daddy wrote an instant poetry abomination that was so disgusting to sing, one could not do so without laughing. So, we changed the final two miles of the walk from a whining pity party to a laugh-a-minute musical march neither of us will ever forget. Welcome to "Birdie Poop!"

This book tells the story of the iconic band formed by Howard Devoto when he left the Buzzcocks. This revised and updated edition brings the story bang up-to-date. Already tired of the thrash and unrelenting nature of punk rock, Devoto wanted to combine the elements of avant-garde and pop. This he did with 'Shot by Both Sides', 'the best rock & roll record of 1978, punk or otherwise' (Rolling Stone) followed by their first album Real Life. Three more equally acclaimed albums followed before Magazine disbanded. With unique access to the band and interviews with the great and the good of the 1980s and iconic musicians of today, Helen Chase presents a riveting insight into the world of punk and beyond. Placing the band in the context of the Manchester music scene she explains why the band has such a solid fan-base and why Magazine had decided to re-form for live gigs some 30 years since they first took to the stage. Magazine was formed by Howard Devoto in 1977 bringing together some of the finest and most innovative musicians of the era. The core line-up with Devoto included John McGeoch, Barry Adamson, Dave Formula and John Doyle. The band had its roots in punk but had a greater emphasis on lyrical content whilst combining elements of avant-garde pop, funk and rock. The band has maintained a cult following which was rewarded in 2009 when the band decided to reform. Whilst working on solo material Dave Formula reopened communication lines between the key players and a series of re-union gigs was planned and received to wide acclaim. Buoyed by this, a studio album of new material (No Thyself) followed in 2011 along with another foray onto the live scene. Magazine are a greatly respected and hugely influential band and their music remains fresh and relevant today.
