During the Great Depression, James Fortinberry started kindergarten in Arizona. Soon after, his family moved to Arkansas to become tenant farmers. While working in the cotton fields, young James plowed behind a mule, picked cotton, sometimes attended school, and moved about every two years with his ten siblings and parents—eventually ending up in Mississippi. The Old South's Cotton Kingdom arose simultaneously in two widely separated localities, the backcountry of the South Atlantic states and the east bank of the Mississippi River. Spreading from these places of origin and later merging, the east and west branches of the upland short-staple cotton industry developed along similar lines until the Civil War.John Hebron Moore's The Emergence of the Cotton Kingdom in the Old Southwest: Mississippi, 1770--1860 traces the evolution of cotton culture in the region bordering the Mississippi River. Moore examines the society supported by that industry, emphasizing technological changes that transformed cotton plantations into agricultural equivalents of factories and slaves into Mule-drawn equipment led to the introduction of improved methods of managing plantation slaves, and that in turn altered the nature of plantation slavery significantly.Moore focuses on Mississippi as both the pioneer cotton state of the Old Southwest and the Old South's leading producer of cotton between 1835 and 1860. Progressive planters made major contributions ot the success of the antebellum upland cotton industry, including the breeding of superior varieties of cotton, the introduction of improved farm implements and machinery, the development of effective methods of combating soil erosion, and systems for managing slaves based upon incentives rather than coercion. In addition, unlike other studies of antebellum southern agriculture, this book examines the contributions to the success of cotton industry made by steamboats and railroads, manufacturing establishments, and the urban population.

Dr. Joe H. Alcorta grew up speaking Spanish. He was born in Novice, Texas, and at the age of two months, his parents took him to Monterrey, Mexico. For seven years, he lived in Mexico. Upon his return, he graduated from Olton High School, and then he received his bachelor's degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He obtained his master's degree from Howard Payne University and earned his Ph D degree from Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. He has taught Spanish in high school and at the university level for over forty five years. At the present time, he works as a professor of Spanish at Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas. Dr. Alcorta has traveled to Mexico, Taiwan, and Spain. He has taught many Spanish classes for professional people. Several newspapers have published his book, Speak Spanish in 60 Days. For many years, Professor Alcorta has served as a guest columnist for the Abilene Reporter-News in Abilene, Texas. He has written many articles in different fields. Dr. Alcorta and his wife of forty-nine years, Liandra, have four children and nine grandchildren. Dr. Alcorta has run five marathons, and many 5Ks and 10Ks. He enjoys reading and writing. He has served on many city boards, and he was elected to The Abilene City Council for two terms. In church, he has taught Bible classes for over forty years, and he enjoys memorizing Scripture. He maintains active membership as a Rotarian and as a Gideon.

How global competition brought the plantation kingdom to its knees. In 1850, America’s plantation economy reigned supreme. U.S. cotton dominated world markets, and American rice, sugarcane, and tobacco grew throughout a vast farming empire that stretched from Maryland to Texas. Four million enslaved African Americans toiled the fields, producing global commodities that enriched the most powerful class of slaveholders the world had ever known. But fifty years later—after emancipation demolished the plantation-labor system, Asian competition flooded world markets with cheap raw materials, and free trade eliminated protected markets—America’s plantations lay in ruins.
