Excerpt from The Fruit Situation: June 22, 1938 About average fruit crops are in prospect this year. Because of the relatively low purchasing power of consumers, however, prices to growers may not be much improved over those received for the large 1937 crops, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Incomes of industrial workers, an important measure of consumer purchasing power for fruits, are about 30 per cent lower than a year earlier. Another unfavorable factor in the situation this season is the unusually large carry-over of canned and dried fruits, and the demand for canning and drying probably Will be much less than in 1937. This Situation will naturally force a larger-than-usual proportion of the deciduous fruits into fresh fruit marketing channels. Excerpt from The Fruit Situation: Jan. 28, 1957 Supplies of oranges, lemons, and pears remaining to be marketed during the first half of 1957 are larger than a year ago, but those of grapefruit, apples, and grapes are smaller. Consumer demand for fruit is expected to be at least as good as in the first half of 1956, and processor demand for citrus will be seasonally strong this winter and spring. The outlook for increased foreign demand for fruit during the 1956-57 season continues generally favorable. However, because of the impact of the closing of the Suez Canal upon the economy of western Europe, exports of United States fruit to some of these countries may turn out smaller than seemed likely earlier in the season. Moreover, exports of citrus fruits to western Europe this winter probably will decline from the relatively high levels of the past fall because of the seasonal availability Of supplies from Mediterranean countries, but probably will continue above last season. Excerpt from The Fruit Situation: January 22, 1940 Reduced export demand for fruits in prospect for the coming months probably will make fresh fruit supplies for United States markets as large in the first half of 1940 as they were in the first half of 1939. Consumer pur chasing power, however, may be somewhat improved over that of the preceding season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Fruit Situation: November 22, 1938 The annual average per-capita production of the 13 fruits increased from about 177 pounds for the 5-year period, 1919-23, to 203 pounds during the past 5 years, l93h-38. During that period the per-capita production of apples had declined materially. This decline, however, has been more than offset by significant increases in the per-capita production of citrus fruits, plums and prunes, and pears. From present indications it appears that during the next 5 years a larger total per-capita supply of fruit may be expected, but an increasing proportion of this supply will be comprised of citrus fruits. Increasing competition for the United States may be expected in foreign markets during the next 5 years. This appears probable because the trend of fruit production is upward in most countries. Many European importing countries are taking steps to insure larger production of deciduous fruits and to improve the quality of the crops. While some modification and reduction of trade barriers has been achieved through trade agreements concluded within the last 3 or M years, there are as yet no agreements in effect with many of the countries providing the largest export outlet for our fruit. Excerpt from Fruit Situation: August 1963 Consumer demand for fresh and processed apples, strong during the 1962 63 season, is expected to be even better in 1963-6h. Demand for apples for processing, especially preferred varieties, should be strong again in 1963-6h. Prospective lighter supplies of canned and frozen deciduous fruits, some at higher prices, and expected lighter supplies of fresh and processed citrus fruits at continuing high prices are additional factors favoring a strong mar ket for the lighter 1963 apple crop. The new cr0p prices will not become clearly established until harvest ing and marketing of fall and winter varieties attain volume in fall. Final outturn of the cr0p, including any changes from current estimates of total production, quality of the apples, and condition of the fruit as harvested, comprise factors affecting ensuing prices. In July on a national average basis, prices received by growers for apples were per bushel, 17 percent above July 1962. The July price was mainly for summer apples and does not necessarily indicate levels for fall and winter varieties.
