When Appahummie Dotts enters the Cook County Jail, his guilt or innocence is irrelevant to staying alive amid all the violence and chaos headed his way. As an eighteen-year-old, he can hardly believe that he’s in the belly of the beast with grown seasoned criminals- most of them without anything to lose. He weighs 130 pounds soaking wet, but he knows how to protect himself and is smart enough to mind his business. In this dramatized account, the author looks back on how he found himself in the Cook County Jail among killers, robbers, rapists, and drug dealers from all walks of life. He also reveals what it’s like to be in the Cook County Jail fighting for your life. Moreover, he shares the frustration of being in the Cook County Jail, recalling how some days he asked the Lord for strength and if the days would ever change. Each one seemed more miserable than the next, making it that much harder to keep going on.

A fast-paced, completely delightful new mystery about what happens when parents get a little too involved in their kids' schools, from NAACP Image Award nominee Elise Bryant. Mavis Miller is not a PTA mom. She has enough on her plate with her feisty seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, an exhausting job at a nonprofit, and the complexities of a multigenerational household. So no one is more surprised than Mavis when she caves to Trisha Holbrook, the long-reigning, slightly terrifying PTA president, and finds herself in charge of the school’s brand-new DEI committee. As one of the few Black parents at this California elementary school, Mavis tries to convince herself this is an opportunity for real change. But things go off the rails at the very first meeting, when the new principal's plans leave Trisha absolutely furious. Later that night, when Mavis spies Trisha in yellow rubber gloves and booties, lugging cleaning supplies and giant black trash bags to her waiting minivan, it’s only natural that her mind jumps to somewhere it surely wouldn’t in the light of day. Except Principal Smith fails to show up for work the next morning, and has been MIA since the meeting. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Mavis, along with the school psychologist with the great forearms (look, it’s worth noting), launches an investigation that will challenge her views on parenting, friendship, and elementary school politics. Brilliantly written, It's Elementary is a quick-witted, escapist romp that perfectly captures just how far parents will go to give their kids the very best, all wrapped in a mystery that will leave you guessing to the very end.

The Rise Of The Masses written by Benjamin Abrams and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-09 with Social Science categories.

An insightful examination of how intersecting individual motivations and social structures mobilize spontaneous mass protests. Between 15 and 26 million Americans participated in protests surrounding the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others as part of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, which is only one of the most recent examples of an immense mobilization of citizens around a cause. In The Rise of the Masses, sociologist Benjamin Abrams addresses why and how people spontaneously protest, riot, and revolt en masse. While most uprisings of such a scale require tremendous resources and organizing, this book focuses on cases where people with no connection to organized movements take to the streets, largely of their own accord. Looking to the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and the Black Lives Uprising, as well as the historical case of the French Revolution, Abrams lays out a theory of how and why massive mobilizations arise without the large-scale planning that usually goes into staging protests. ? Analyzing a breadth of historical and regional cases that provide insight into mass collective behavior, Abrams draws on first-person interviews and archival sources to argue that people organically mobilize when a movement speaks to their pre-existing dispositions and when structural and social conditions make it easier to get involved—what Abrams terms affinity-convergence theory. Shedding a light on the drivers behind large spontaneous protests, The Rise of the Masses offers a significant theory that could help predict movements to come.

What if the prison industrial complex existed without the institutional middleman? What if indebtedness was a crime? What if all crimes could result in enslavement? In My Moonlit Mornings is a dynamic piece of realistic fiction, written in a dystopian alternate America that has permanently legalized involuntary servitude.John Harrison, president of the newly named United Confederacy of America, has revised the constitution to permit slavery in a profitable new form referred to as a Blacktract: the product of an authoritarian hierarchy system installed in the forefront of America's Bill of Rights. Through his influential manifesto, The Superior Stratagem, John Harrison and his son have persuaded the American people with alternative facts and blunt charisma to welcome involuntary servitude by abolishing prisons and effectively subjugating criminals and the impoverished. The two most important laws in the Harrisonian revised Constitution, written entirely by President John Harrison himself, proceed as follows:Indebtedness, lasting a period of six months or more, is a crime. All crimes are punishable by Blacktract at the discretion of the victim and approval of the United Confederacy of America.Blacktracts are not involuntary labor or forced upon anyone, until they sign the solid line at the bottom. Once the paper is wetted, all of the signers' desires dissipate to be replaced by their proprietor's desires, all fruits of their labor are inherited by the proprietor, and all of their basic human needs must be filled by that same master. Though, and I must add this, for one to not sign a Blacktract is death. These laws, coupled with preexisting tendencies for poor people, people of color, immigrants, and women to fall into debt or commit a crime create a tense world of profitable subjugation that is similar to our own world if it were under a magnifying glass.Malik White, a stubborn runaway Blacktractee, finally escapes his content life as a mechanic under an abusive master in a Mississippi auto shop and travels to New York City after hearing about its unique opposition to the Confederate American government. There, he finds Keri Carter, the compassionate leader of the Railroad to Equal Life, or REL: the last enemy to the United Confederacy, domestic or international. Keri then introduces Malik to her overly violent, super-assassin sister, Nina, who has a big surprise of her own waiting at home for Keri.
