Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

La historia es un viaje por el tiempo. No solo porque permite recuperar un pasado en común para preservar la memoria, también ayuda a situarnos en el presente y a prepararnos para el futuro. El término conmemoración, de contenido histórico, es una bella palabra que convida a una comunidad, a veces tan grande como una nación o la propia humanidad, a recordar, en compañía, un determinado acontecimiento. Esta historia y esta conmemoración son las que ahora nos convocan para una fiesta: el centenario de Fabricato. Esta es una celebración que integra a una de las más grandes textileras e industrias manufactureras del país a lo largo del siglo XX con la Universidad EAFIT, un pariente un poco más joven, de sesenta años, que ha vivido junto a Fabricato una existencia cruzada por la transformación. Bastaría con decir que el alma de una universidad, que es su biblioteca, lleva en el caso de EAFIT el nombre de un fundador y, a la vez, presidente de Fabricato: el ingeniero textil Luis Echavarría Villegas. Pero no solo este fundador de EAFIT estuvo vinculado a Fabricato. Otro de sus fundadores, el ingeniero químico Jorge Iván Rodríguez, hizo su primera experiencia profesional en Fabricato, empresa en la que trabó amistad con un fundador más, quien, además llegaría a ser presidente de la textilera, Jorge Posada Greiffenstein. Otro de los fundadores, Luis Fernando Echavarría Vélez, llegaría a subgerente de Fabricato. En total, cuatro de los dieciocho fundadores de EAFIT estuvieron relacionados de manera directa con la compañía. De ahí que los vínculos tan estrechos se mantengan todavía. También, la compañía norteamericana Burlington Mills, socia de Fabricato en Textiles Panamericanos (Pantex), fue clave en el nacimiento del Instituto Tecnológico, que completaría la razón social de EAF con EAFIT. Y son más los emprendimientos y proyectos cruzados, como el hecho de que la primera aula especial de nuestro centro educativo lleve el nombre de Fabricato. La lista es más larga. Por este motivo, la fiesta centenaria de esta emblemática empresa la sentimos como nuestra. La Universidad EAFIT agradece la confianza depositada en ella, y en especial en su Grupo de Investigación en Historia Empresarial, que con su dedicación durante los dos años corridos entre 2018 y 2019 logró reconstruir y dejar memoria escrita y gráfica de una historia llena de anécdotas, de compromiso urbano y municipal, de generación de empleo y riqueza, de innovación permanente y de palanca del desarrollo económico e industrial del país. En síntesis, y como lo afirman los autores de esta obra conmemorativa, esta es la historia de una empresa que ha construido nación. Before it became the center of Latin American drug trafficking, the Colombian city of Medellín was famous as a success story of industrialization, a place where protectionist tariffs had created a “capitalist paradise.” By the 1960s, the city’s textile industrialists were presenting themselves as the architects of a social stability that rested on Catholic piety and strict sexual norms. Dulcinea in the Factory explores the boundaries of this paternalistic order by investigating workers’ strategies of conformity and resistance and by tracing the disciplinary practices of managers during the period from the turn of the century to a massive reorganization of the mills in the late 1950s. Ann Farnsworth-Alvear’s analyses of archived personnel records, internal factory correspondence, printed regulations, and company magazines are combined with illuminating interviews with retired workers to allow a detailed reconstruction of the world behind the mill gate. In a place where the distinction between virgins and nonvirgins organized the labor market for women, the distance between chaste and unchaste behavior underlay a moral code that shaped working women’s self-perceptions. Farnsworth-Alvear challenges the reader to understand gender not as an opposition between female and male but rather as a normative field, marked by “proper” and “improper” ways of being female or male. Disputing the idea that the shift in the mills’ workforce over several decades from mainly women to almost exclusively men was based solely on economic factors, the author shows how gender and class, as social practices, converged to shape industrial development itself. Innovative in its creative employment of subtle and complex material, Dulcinea in the Factory addresses long-standing debates within labor history about proletarianization and work culture. This book’s focus on Colombia will make it valuable to Latin Americanists, but it will also appeal to a wide readership beyond Latin American and labor studies, including historians and sociologists, as well as students of women’s studies, social movements, and anthropology.
