The late E. Roy John is considered the pioneer in the field of neurometrics – the science of measuring the underlying organization of the brain’s electrical activity. Volume 1, co-authored by Robert W. Thatcher, and Volume 2 both originally published in 1977, were among the first books this field. Volume 3, written by colleague Thalía Harmony, followed in 1984. The field expanded significantly in the 1990s and thousands of articles have subsequently been published. Available together for the first time these 3 volumes were important foundational works for the fields of quantitative electrophysiology and neurometrics.

Hardbound. The papers presented in this volume have been chosen from those presented at the Sixth International Evoked Potentials Symposium. The well chosen title Functional Neuroscience reflects that all of the measures described are of function (as opposed to form) and functional also in the sense of clinical applicability. The book presents a balanced view across a broadening field, with special attention for clinical utility, as clinical findings also contribute to a furtherance of basic knowledge, leading to improved clinical utility. This carefully chosen selection of papers conveys well the utility, the action and the promise within this area of functional neuroscience.

Highlighting the principles of basic neuroscience and its application to neurosurgical disease, this book breaks down neurological conditions into current academic themes and advances. The book is split into two sections, with the first covering basic and computational neuroscience including neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and the growing use of artificial intelligence. The second section concentrates on specific conditions, such as gliomas, degenerative cervical myelopathy and peripheral nerve injury. Outlining the pathophysiological underpinnings of neurosurgical conditions and the key investigative tools used to study disease burden, this book will be an invaluable source for the academic neurosurgeon undertaking basic and translational research.
