"For decades following Alfred Adler's pioneering work in the 1920s, family therapy enjoyed only a minor or adjunct role among the various treatment approaches in the field of mental health. Recently, however, family therapy has experienced phenomenal growth in impact and popularity. The functional family therapy approach described in this book, a synthesis of interpersonal, behavioral, and systems orientations, represents a new evolutionary step in the treatment of families. It is based on the substantial works of our predecessors and the experience derived from many hours of seeing families in both clinical and research contexts. The goal of this book is to provide a clear description of the procedures and structure necessary for the successful practice of family therapy. Family therapists need an unambiguous conceptual framework and a set of specific techniques for dealing with families in distress. At the same time, however, they cannot succeed if they are merely technicians. For this reason the book is also designed to enhance the flexibility and creativity therapists need to respond effectively to the myriad needs, idiosyncrasies, and forms of resistance presented by the different families they see. To this end much of the material in the book is presented in a somewhat intuitive manner, often by example and analogy. Part One describes the functional family model as it generally applies to all families, including the specific conceptual, technical, and interpersonal skills required of all family therapists. Conceptual skills comprise the perspectives therapists need to understand families, as well as the knowledge necessary for developing appropriate therapeutic goals and selecting suitable techniques. Technical skills include the verbal, nonverbal, and physical tools that therapists use as vehicles of change. They represent the technology of what therapists do, based on their conceptual understanding of what needs to be done. Interpersonal skills represent the way therapists apply their techniques. The efficacy of the techniques depends significantly on the atmosphere and family attitudes created through these interpersonal skills. Part Two is designed to facilitate therapists' flexibility by describing each of the phases of intervention, with emphasis on the goals of each phase, rather than on the specific techniques. Part Two also describes a number of unique developmental and structural aspects of particular families that require specific techniques"--Preface. This book details the history, science, and practice of Functional Family Therapy (FFT), an evidence-based model practitioners can use to understand families, the problems they face, and how to enable families to create real and lasting change. Functional Family Therapy (FFT) has evolved from a theory taught only in universities to become a treatment model implemented in more than eight countries and ten languages. It features specialized training, certification, and systemic fidelity processes that are used worldwide. FFT has been recognized in recent years as one of the premier evidence-based family intervention models for working with adolescents with problem behaviors. Chapters describe the evolution of the theory and extensive research support for FFT, provide overviews of each stage of treatment, and offer practical guidance for using FFT in a variety of contexts including juvenile and adult justice, child welfare, foster care, and behavioral health; using FFT in community contexts, including training and supervision and measuring and integrating client feedback; and using cutting-edge technological advances to better deliver optimal outcomes for families.

In Functional Family Therapy for High-Risk Adolescents, James F. Alexander demonstrates his approach to working with families that have teenage children exhibiting behavior issues and associated emotional disruptions. Teens with behavior problems are one of the most difficult populations with whom therapists work, as adolescents and their families frequently enter treatment against their will, either under legal order or at strong insistence of authority figures such as school administrators. Family interactions can be hostile, and a sense of hopelessness is not uncommon. Dr. Alexander's approach involves working to increase family motivation to change by disrupting negative attributions they may have about themselves and other family members and replacing these with more positive and adaptive attributions. In this video, Dr. Alexander works with a mother, father, and their 15-year-old son, who has been exhibiting behavior problems such as drug use and school truancy and who has recently been charged with breaking and entering. The session focuses not only on the son, but also the mother and father, whose relationship has been under significant strain for years due to the mother's own substance use and frequent disappearances from the family. This DVD features clients portrayed by actors on the basis of a composite of several cases.
