Regular physical exercise is associated with substantial health benefits. Recent evidence not only holds for cardiovascular effects promoting "physical health", but also for the central nervous system believed to promote "brain health”. Moderate physical exercise has been found to improve learning, memory, and attentional processing, with recent research indicating that neuroprotective mechanisms and associated plasticity in brain structure and function also benefit. Physical exercise is also known to induce a range of acute or sustained psychophysiological effects, among these mood elevation, stress reduction, anxiolysis, and hypoalgesia. Today, modern functional neuroimaging techniques afford direct measurement of the acute and chronic relation of physical exercise on the human brain, as well as the correlation of the derived physiological in vivo signals with behavioral outcomes recorded during and after exercise. A wide range of imaging techniques have been applied to human exercise research, ranging from electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to positron emission tomography (PET). All of these imaging methods provide distinct information, and they differ considerably in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, availability, cost, and associated risks. However, from a “multimodal imaging” perspective, neuroimaging provides an unprecedented potential to unravel the neurobiology of human exercise, covering a wide spectrum ranging from structural plasticity in gray and white matter, network dynamics, global and regional perfusion, evoked neuronal responses to the quantification of neurotransmitter release. The aim of this book is to provide the current state of the human neuroimaging literature in the emerging field of the neurobiological exercise sciences and to outline future applications and directions of research.

The 1990s have been designated by congress and the president as the decade of the brain, in part due to recognition of the expansion of knowledge and technology in the realm of neuroscience. Functional neuroimaging encompasses the technique of electrophysiology (EEG), magnetoecephalography (MEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). Through these techniques, high resolution, 3 dimensional anatomical information can be obtained ofthe brain and it's functioning in normal and diseases states. Neuroscientists everywhere use neuroimaging in research, and these techniques are also used regularly by clinicians, and increasingly by biopsychologists. Given the increase in the number of techniques, and their diversity of applications, there is a need for a comprehensive volume to address both the technology and function of their use. Key Features * Addresses the technical problems of image registration * Compares different approaches to inter-subject and intra-subject analysis * Explores the synergestic advantages of multivolume integration * Divided into four sections devoted to relevant, timely issues

Papanicolaou and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-27 with Psychology categories.

The Oxford Handbook of Functional Brain Imaging in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neurosciences describes in a readily accessible manner the several functional neuroimaging methods and critically appraises their applications that today account for a large part of the contemporary cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology literature. The complexity and the novelty of these methods often cloud appreciation of the methods' contributions and future promise. The Handbook begins with an overview of the basic concepts of functional brain imaging common to all methods, and proceeds with a description of each of them, namely magnetoencephalography (MEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Its second part covers the various research applications of functional neuroimaging on issues like the function of the default mode network; the possibility and the utility of imaging of consciousness; the search for mnemonic traces of concepts; human will and decision-making; motor cognition; language; the mechanisms of affective states and pain; the presurgical mapping of the brain; and others. As such, the volume reviews the methods and their contributions to current research and comments on the degree to which they have enhanced our understanding of the relation between neurophysiological activity and sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. Moreover, it carefully considers realistic contributions of functional neuroimaging to future endeavors in cognitive neuroscience, medicine, and neuropsychology.

Functional Neuroimaging With Multiple Modalities written by Yongxia Zhou and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with HEALTH & FITNESS categories.

Author Biography: To bring the current state-of-the-art medical imaging techniques to forefront and to facilitate the applications of advanced scientific and research techniques is one of the dreams of the author. Yongxia Zhou had completed her Ph.D from University of Southern California in Biomedical imaging (2004). Her research interest is neuroimaging and neuroscience applications. She had been trained and worked as neuroimaging scientists in several prestigious institutes including Columbia University, New York University and University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on multi-modal neuroimaging including using MRI/PET and EEG instrumentation as well as the integration of these multi-modal to make the best usage of each modality and to help interpreting underlying co-existing pathophysiological for better disease diagnosis and treatment. Her specific interest in MRI technology includes mapping of blood flow, oxygen saturation and extraction fraction and metabolism as well as vascular reactivity assessment with BOLD and arterial spin labeling (ASL)-based blood flow measures. She has published several book chapters, over 20 papers and more than 40 abstracts in reputed international journals and conferences,. She has been serving as several journal and international conference abstract reviewers including JMRI, JCBFM, ISMRM and ICAD. Book Description: Searching for an objective and specific in vivo biomarker for normal physiology and early disease diagnosis has always been a major goal, but also one of the most challenging aspects in brain research. Possible earlier identification of the key pathological signature of diseases (for instance, Alzheimer's disease (AD)) is critical for efficient treatment and disease prevention. The concept of combined imaging features is based on the recent accumulating evidence that neither PET nor MRI alone is enough for characterizing the earliest AD pathology. The results of this book will, for the first time, highlight in vivo the possibility to describe the early detection and multiple biomarkers based on combined imaging features using PET-MRI, which is the most ideal model for such studies. The newly-developed hybrid imaging technology combining PET and MRI (PET/MRI) for the past few years is emerging, and has drawn much attention in technical developments and clinical applications. PET-MRI opens new horizons in multi-parametric neuroimaging for clinical research that allows simultaneous imaging of multiple parametric changes, such as blood flow and metabolism at the same time. This integration significantly decreases the potential errors in image registration, the difficulty of interpreting underlying coexisting pathophysiological events, and most importantly, patient discomfort. This book will provide the most up-to-date and current status of multiple neuroimaging techniques. The most intriguing application of multi-modality neuroimaging lies in simultaneous interpretation and unique information that each modality can offer. Therefore, this book will present some forefront and interesting examples for the first time in this field of research. This will hopefully trigger the interest of colleagues in this challenging field and help facilitate the applications of the neuroimaging techniques described. Target Audience: College to Post-graduate students, professionals including faculties in universities and scientists and other research and development staff interested in this topic
