A study was made on the roles of the Hering-Breuer reflex, the pneumotaxic center, the apneustic center, and the medullary respiratory center in the regulation of rate and depth of respiration in response to changes in blood concentration of CO2 and 02. Integrated phrenic nerve discharge, abdominal respiratory movement, and intra-abdominal and intratracheal pressures were recorded in decerebrate cats as they breathed air, 5% CO2, 7% CO2, 10% 02 and 100% 02. By using decerebrate cats as control, results from vagotomy, pneumotaxic center ablation, and brain stem transection, alone or in combination, indicate: (1) Hering-Breuer reflex controls respiratory rate and in the absence of pneumotaxic center, maintains a constant depth; (2) pneumotaxic center controls respiratory depth and in the absence of Hering-Breuer reflex, maintains a constant rate; (3) apneustic center provides maximum respiratory depth and prolonged inspiratory duration so that rate can be regulated by Hering-Breuer reflex and depth by pneumotaxic center; (4) medullary respiratory center serves as a final pathway and integration center of the impulses from the higher centers. Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 10: Respiration focuses on the movements in respiratory research, including studies on the breathing process in humans; how respiratory muscles aid in respiration; and how various drugs affect breathing. The book also presents how respiratory muscles in humans, birds, and mammals function during different activities. The text also outlines the diseases that arise due to limited expiratory airflow and how muscles undergo fatigue. Divided into nine parts and organized into 77 chapters, the book further looks into the function of the lung during respiration through the comparison of the breathing patterns of humans, birds, and mammals. The text also elaborates how drugs are instituted in various laboratory exercises to determine their effects on the respiratory system in all the subjects mentioned. The book also identifies the different parts of the body that are involved in the breathing process. Readers and scholars who are interested in research concerning the trends in respiratory physiology will find this book interesting.

Regulation Of Ventilation And Gas Exchange written by Donald Davies and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Science categories.

Regulation of Ventilation and Gas Exchange is a comprehensive account of the regulation of ventilation and gas exchange. Topics covered include central nervous system regulation of ventilation; ventilatory response to muscular exercise; respiratory control in air-breathing ectotherms; and breathing during sleep. Hydrogen ion homeostasis of the cerebral extracellular fluid is also discussed, along with specific mechanisms for O2 and CO transport in the lung and placenta. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the neural elements that modify and/or are intrinsic to the respiratory rhythm. The next two chapters deal with the contribution of metabolic factors in the control of ventilation, paying particular attention to the importance of metabolic factors during muscular exercise and the specific role of ammonia in the regulation of respiration. A view of ventilatory control from a comparative standpoint, stressing both adaptive and mechanistic phenomena, is then presented. Subsequent chapters explore the regulation of breathing during sleep; regulation of cerebral extracellular fluid acid-base composition and its role in the control of ventilation and cerebral blood flow; carrier-mediated transport of respiratory gases; and measurement of ventilation-perfusion ratios is presented. The last chapter considers lung surfactant mechanics and addresses issues such as in vitro vs in situ measurements of surface tension and the effects of surface tension on pulmonary vascular resistance and interstitial pressure. This monograph is designed not only for respiratory physiologists but also for students and researchers in other areas with an inclination toward respiratory physiology.
