Las Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales (IDE) son, en esencia, un conjunto de herramientas técnicas, de acuerdos políticos y de estándares que permiten al usuario acceder a través de la web a la información geográfica proporcionada por organismos, instituciones y empresas implicadas. Su instalación es voluntaria en América Latina, con el auspicio del Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia y del Comité Permanente de las IDE de las Américas. En Europa es obligatoria, tras la publicación de la Directiva INSPIRE, lo que ha planteado un desafío en la formación de personal especializado en ambas márgenes del Atlántico. La puesta en marcha y mantenimiento de estos sistemas, exige que haya personal técnico preparado en múltiples aspectos no adecuadamente cubiertos por ninguna titulación tradicional. No hay textos que traten el tema de las IDE de manera global, exponiendo las circunstancias tecnológicas, políticas y normativas que las rodean. Por esta razón y tras la impartición en la UPM de seis cursos de 150 h (AECID + IGN de España), dirigidos a técnicos superiores iberoamericanos y de quedar evidenciada la necesidad de un texto que considere en forma ordenada los fundamentos detrás de las IDE, se ha procedido a su redacción. El Libro tiene la vocación de constituirse en un texto de referencia para la docencia universitaria en Iberoamérica y España, y para ello cuenta entre sus autores a representantes de la mayoría de los países de la región.
