A importância da matemática na física se tornou mais evidente no início do século XX em virtude da necessidade de explicar fenômenos que se encontram distantes da experimentação direta. Afinal, neste cenário, não há opção senão a de confiar no modelo matemático subjacente. De outro lado, não se pode negar que os insights físicos têm motivado o desenvolvimento de diversas teorias matemáticas, bem como a obtenção de relações entre teorias já existentes. Isto reflete a carência de materiais de estudo que sejam voltados simultaneamente à comunidade de físicos e de matemáticos. Com este livro, pretende-se cobrir minimamente esta falha. Nas duas primeiras partes do texto, topologia e geometria são desenvolvidas desde os seus fundamentos, numa linguagem moderna, sucinta e acessível. Aqui se encontram todos os requisitos à leitura da terceira parte, na qual se apresenta a teoria geral dos buracos negros sob um ponto de vista consistente.
