“Occasionally you come across a book that does everything it claims - and then some. This is one” (Blueprint) Architects have been responsible for many of the modern furniture classics of the 20th century - Mies's Barcelona Chair, Eileen Gray's side table and Le Corbusier's chaise longue. Furniture and Architecture takes a unique look at the relationship between architects and furniture design. Focusing not only on classic mid-20th-century design i.e. Eames, Mies, Le Corbusier and Gropius, it also provides a unique insight into who will produce the next generation of classics by asking an international-array of established designers to give their tips for the top young architect-designers. In additional it includes exclusive interviews with high-profile architects as well as with key figures in furniture manufacture and retail. A directory of specialist retailers, who sell architect-designed furniture, makes this an invaluable resource for architects and the interested public. The book includes comprehensive articles and images of popular modernist architects such as Erno Goldfinger, Arne Jacobsen and Eero Saarinen It also features interviews with architects Alvaro Siza, David Adjaye and Selfridges director Vittore Radice Lavishly illustrated with many full-colour images Contains a directory of specialist retailers selling architect-designed furniture

For centuries, architects have turned their hand to custom furniture in a practice that has resulted in a number of iconic designs, including the timeless Eames Lounge and Ottoman and the ubiquitous Barcelona chair created by Mies van der Rohe for his acclaimed Barcelona Pavilion. Furniture by Architects beautifully illustrates bespoke design by some of the world’s leading architects, who are increasingly designing furniture as clients seek interiors customised to specific needs. Foster + Partners’ 520 Armchair for Walter Knoll has the texture and comfort found in a traditional leather armchair, while the Liquid Glacial Dining & Coffee Table by Zaha Hadid Design, made from polished clear Plexiglas, capture the spirit of her architecture, with their distinctive fluid lines, revealing the waves and ripples below the surface.

"Are architects the best furniture designers? The author, Deputy Keeper of the RIBA Drawings Collection, presents an impressive selection of designs by architects from the 17th to the 20th century to support her case that they are. The drawings range from the earliest known surviving design (for a bed by John Smythson) to Wells Coates' plan for a minimal flat. Examples include William Kent's State barge for Frederick, Prince of Wales, an elephant lamp for an Indian nabob, garden seats for Kensington Palace and a cocktail cabinet for the actress Evelyn Laye"--Back cover.

Mies Van Der Rohe written by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and has been published by Ediciones Polígrafa S.A. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Art categories.

German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is, without doubt, one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. The modern city, with its towers of glass and steel, can be at least in part attributed to his influence. Equally significant, if smaller in scale, is Mies’ daring design of furniture, pieces that exhibit an unerring sense of proportion, as well as minimalist forms and exquisitely refined details. After an apprenticeship with furniture designer Bruno Paul in Berlin, he joined the office of architect Peter Behrens where he met Le Corbusier and Walther Gropius. In the mid-1920s, he began to design furniture, pieces that he conceived and created for particular interiors. Mies van der Rohe’s furniture is known for fine craftsmanship, a mix of traditional luxurious fabrics (like leather) combined with modern chrome frames, and a distinct separation of the supporting structure and the supported surfaces. His modern furniture pieces using new industrial technologies, like the Barcelona chair and table (1929), and the Brno chair (1930), have become acclaimed icons of twentieth-century design.

Mies And Modern Living written by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Architect-designed furniture categories.

"Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is not only one of the most important architects of the twentieth century, his furniture designs are also considered milestones in the history of design. Even today, his tubular and flat-bar steel furniture, such as the famous Barcelona Chan, are to a large extent still in serial production. Based on the most recent scholarship and taking new material into consideration, this publication devotes itself to these modern classics and in doing so, discusses the progressive concepts of interior space developed by Mies van der Rohe, who invariably understood the interior-design aspect as part of an overall architectural plan. Well-informed experts not only look back on the artistic highlights of Mies's career and their developmental history, their contributions also bring to life the atmosphere that prevailed in Berlin in the twenties and thirties. In addition, this book contains a series of previously unpublished photographs of Mies's work."--Contraportada.
