The present book examines William Carlos Williams’s negotiation with cultural modes and systems of the Chinese landscape tradition in his landscape writing. The theory of “literary worlds” has become increasingly important in comparative and world literatures. But how are the often-contradictory elements of Eastern and Western literatures to cohere in the new worlds such contact creates? Drawing on the latest work in philosophical logic and analytic Asian philosophy, this monograph proposes a new model of literary worlds that is best suited to comparative literature dealing with Western and East Asian traditions. Unlike much discussion of world literature anchored in North American traditions, featured here is the transnational work of artists, philosophers, and poets writing in English, French, Japanese and Mandarin in the twentieth century. Rather than imposing sharp borders, this book suggests that vague boundaries link Eastern and Western literary works and traditions, and that degrees of distance can better help us to see the multiple dimensions that both distinguish and join together literary worlds East and West. As such, it enables us to grasp not only how East Asian and Western writers translate one another’s works into their own languages and traditions, but also how modern writers East and West modify their own traditions in order to make them fit in the new constellation of literary worlds brought about by the complex flow of literary information across twentieth-century Eurasia.

The encounter between Buddhism and American literature has been a powerful one for both parties. While Buddhism fueled the Beat movement's resounding critique of the United States as a spiritually dead society, Beat writers and others have shaped how Buddhism has been presented to and perceived by a North American audience. Contributors to this volume explore how Asian influences have been adapted to American desires in literary works and Buddhist poetics, or how Buddhist practices emerge in literary works. Starting with early aesthetic theories of Ernest Fenollosa, made famous but also distorted by Ezra Pound, the book moves on to the countercultural voices associated with the Beat movement and its friends and heirs such as Ginsberg, Kerouac, Snyder, Giorno, Waldman, and Whalen. The volume also considers the work of contemporary American writers of color influenced by Buddhism, such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Charles Johnson, and Lan Cao. Ignored in Britain and forgotten for generations in Japan, Henry Dyer (1848-1918), engineer, educationalist and author of two major works on Japan as well as dozens of papers and pamphlets and other works, has been the subject of ongoing research by Nobuhiro Miyoshi (Hiroshima University) for over thirty years, culminating in this updated and expanded version of his original 1989 biography, Dyer no Nippon. At the age of 24, even before he had taken his final exams at Glasgow University, Henry Dyer was appointed principal of Japan’s new Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), with a remit to set up a world-class engineering institution that would deliver the engineers with the technical know-how and expertise to build the New Japan. Dyer’s appointment by Ito Hirobumi, the then Vice-Minister for Public Works and a member of the Japanese Embassy in London (later to become Prime Minister). In the nine years Dyer was in Japan – unfettered by ancient academic traditions and protocols – he formulated an approach to engineering education that enabled the ICE to become the most advanced institution of its kind in the world, later to become part of Tokyo University. This study makes an important new contribution to o-yatoi (‘hired foreigner’) studies of the Meiji period, particularly in the field of education, and helps illuminate existing perceptions regarding the nature of Japan’s route to modernization.
