Excerpt from The Southern Slav Question: And the Habsburg Monarchy No country in Europe presents such a variety of complicated problems for solution as the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; and among these, none is more important and more pressing than the Southern Slav Question. In it are involved the future fortunes of the whole Croat and Serb race, and through them the fate of the Western half of the Balkan Peninsula - from the Gulf of Trieste to the Bulgarian frontier, from the plains of Southern Hungary to the mountains of Albania. On it depends the balance of power on the Adriatic, with all its bearings upon the international situation. Above all, the Southern Slav Question may at any moment exercise a decisive influence upon the foreign policy of Vienna, and upon the internal development of the Dual Monarchy. For on the one hand Austria cannot hope to extend her influence in the Balkans, unless she enlists in her cause the sympathies and support of her eight millions of Southern Slav subjects; while on the other hand, the Croato-Serb race, by reason of its geographical and strategic position, has it in its power by a strict alliance with Austria against Hungary, to destroy completely in favour of the former the balance upon which the Dual System is based, and so to play havoc with the entire mechanism and pave the way for that compromise between federalism and centralism through which alone the acute racial problems of the Dual Monarchy can be solved. The present volume attempts to trace the growth of national feeling among the Croats and Serbs of the Dual Monarchy, and to describe in fuller detail the more recent movement in favour of Croato-Serb Unity. The fact that the English language contains no book devoted to the history of this movement, must be my excuse for occasional prolixity; not merely the main building, but even the substructure had to be created. Excerpt from The Jugoslavs in Future Europe The Jugoslav question constitutes an integral part of the formidable European problem which will have to be solved by the future peace. Even if she wished it, Great Britain could not withdraw her interest from the Jugoslavs. Every Serb soldier, every Croat or Slovene volunteer, who dies a hero's death in defence of Serbia, sheds his blood not only for his own national cause, but also for that of Great Britain - just as the splendid Tommy is not only fighting for the sacred soil of his own native land, but also for ours as well. We are all fighting for common aims, and we are all expecting our victory to bring forth a better future. Now, what is the Jugoslav question? And, first of all, who are the Jugoslavs, and what do they want? The Jugoslavs are the Southern Slavs. "Jug" is the word for "South" in the Slav languages. In history the Jugoslavs appear under three names - Croats, Serbs and Slovenes. But these are not three different nationalities. Sprung from the same origin, speaking the same language, inhabiting a continuous territory, having identical customs and, above all, identical national aspirations, the Serbs, the Croats and the Slovenes are one single nation, designated by one common name - the Jugoslav. Excerpt from Southern Slav Culture The prevailing idea abroad concerning the Southern Slavs (Jugoslavs) is that they are a very young nation, who have never had any culture to speak of in the past, and may prove incapable of high intellectual achievement in the future. This impression is distinctly erroneous. Jugoslav civilization is as old as that of any of the great European nations, although, unfortunately, it has hitherto lacked continuity and unity. During the centuries of the past it has produced remarkable monuments of literature and art, and even now, in spite of the most adverse circumstances, the Jugoslavs are displaying a marvellous vitality and all qualities essential towards the achievement of the highest levels of culture. Even a short survey of the history of Jugoslav letters, science, and art will suffice to prove the truth of this assertion. First Beginnings. (800-1200 A. D.) Excerpt from The Southern Slavs AT the outbreak of this war one often heard the question, What have we to do with Serbia 1' and to such a question it could until the end of July 1914 with a considerable amount of truth have been answered, Nothing.' There is scarcely any race in Europe of which most people in England know less than they do of the Serbs, and there is no European country with which we have had less intercourse. This ignorance is not altogether our own fault it is the result partly of geographical, partly of historical facts which have till now contributed to distract our attention from the western half of the Balkan peninsula. National Romanticism written by Balázs Trencsényi and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-10 with Political Science categories.

67 texts, including hymns, manifestos, articles or extracts from lengthy studies exemplify the relation between Romanticism and the national movements in the cultural space ranging from Poland to the Ottoman Empire. Each text is accompanied by a presentation of the author, and by an analysis of the context in which the respective work was born. The end of the 18th century and first decades of the 19th were in many respects a watershed period in European history. The ideas of the Enlightenment and the dramatic convulsions of the French Revolution had shattered the old bonds and cast doubt upon the established moral and social norms of the old corporate society. In culture a new trend, Romanticism, was successfully asserting itself against Classicism and provided a new key for a growing number of activists to 're-imagine' their national community, reaching beyond the traditional frameworks of identification (such as the 'political nation', regional patriotism, or Christian universalism). The collection focuses on the interplay of Romantic cultural discourses and the shaping of national ideology throughout the 19th century, tracing the patterns of cultural transfer with Western Europe as well as the mimetic competition of national ideologies within the region.
