The practical empirical research examines the perceptions of AI in Saarland SMEs focusing on the actual use and their opinion of AI changing the workplace. Qualitative interviews with SMEs in Saarland was compared to existing surveys done concerning AI. 20 interviews have been conducted in total and data from the surveys was analysed with an explaining methodology as a confirmatory research approach. It addresses key elements of how technology is transforming the workplace and people management, including HR automation, robotisation, big data analytics, smart systems, virtualisation, AI, machine learning and the Internet of Things. The chapters offer a collection of cases from various Global South countries, draw on various types of research (empirical, review papers, conceptual and theoretical) andincorporate contextual issues such as technology, politics, culture, ethics and economics. Despite the relatively slow adoption of AI in the Global South compared to developed nations, its potential impact on the future of work remains significant, particularly in shaping the role of HR as a bridge between technology and human resources. This book will be a valuable resource for scholars, students and policymakers interested in the future of work in the Global South, as it brings together critical insights from scholars and practitioners from the region, providing a much-needed perspective on this important issue.

The Future of Work in Asia and Beyond presents the findings and associated implications arising from a collaborative research study conducted on the potential impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR – or Industry 4.0) on the labour markets, occupations and associated future workforce competencies and skills across ten countries. The 4IR concerns the digital transformation in society and business – an interface between technologies in the physical, digital and biological disciplines. The book explores many related issues: the nature of the 4IR, as well as demographic, generational and socio-cultural issues, economic and political perspectives, public and private sector similarities and differences, business strategy and managerial implications, human resource management/planning strategies, policies and practices, industry innovations, ‘best practice’ cases and comparative country studies. Chapters are based on a framework which combines labour market and multiple stakeholder theories. Issues are explored through the perceptions of organisational managers based in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand to provide an analysis of organisational, industry and government preparedness for the 4IR. This book is recommended reading for anyone wanting to gain an understanding of the 4IR and a range of related challenges and issues, as well as suggested strategies for governments, education and industry that are necessary to address them.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing in areas such as pattern detection, classification, and prediction, which were long thought to be the exclusive realm of humans. These developments are triggering excitement about the potential of AI but are also raising concerns about possible risks. The versatility of AI and its speed of development have led to a wide range of applications, both in personal and professional environments. The most dramatic effects are, however, in the world of work. AI is impacting job loss and employability and causing a transformation of tasks in a range of occupations and sectors. It is also affecting other aspects of the labor market, such as recruitment, performance monitoring, and dismissal. As such, the development and implementation of AI are raising concerns about the future of work, both in terms of its mere existence and quality, with critical implications for the social fabric as well as future development prospects.
