Es gab damals im Westen verschiedene Arten von Marshals. Da war einmal der Town Marshal, der von der Stadt‐ oder Gemeindeverwaltung angestellt wurde und dessen Befugnisse nur innerhalb der jeweiligen Ortsgrenze Geltung hatten. Ganz anders verhielt es sich beim US Marshal. Dieser wurde von der Bundesregierung als höchster Polizeibeamter eines Bundeslandes oder Bundes‐Territoriums eingesetzt. Er war für Verletzungen von Bundesgesetzen zuständig, also zum Beispiel bei Verbrechen gegen die US‐Post, gegen die Eisenbahnen, die Armee, die Indianer und die Heimstätter. Der US Marshal hatte mehrere Stellvertreter, die US Deputy Marshals. Letztere hatten etwa den Rang eines Armee‐Captains inne. Sie gehörten der gleichen Besoldungsstufe an und erhielten Meilengeld, Spesen und andere Zuwendungen. Neben diesen beiden häufigsten Gruppen gab es noch jenen Marshal‐Typ, den man Texas‐Marshal nannte. Dazu muss man wissen, dass es in Texas schon Marshals gab, als Texas noch nicht zu den Vereinigten Staaten gehörte. Nachdem es dann als souveräner Staat den Vereinigten Staaten beitrat, blieb die Einrichtung der Texas‐Marshals noch lange Zeit bestehen. Diese Männer kümmerten sich oft nur wenig um die US‐Gesetze und Anordnungen der Bundesregierung. In oft rücksichtsloser Machtanmaßung gingen sie nicht nur gegen Banditen vor, sondern auch gegen korrupte Town Marshals, geldgierige Sheriffs und verbrecherische Behörden. The studies presented in this special issue of VIRUS GENES provide information on the two aspects of virus evolution: the ancient evolution of viruses from the time prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells evolved, and the ongoing process of the current molecular evolution of viruses.
