This book is the first to discuss, for an English-speaking audience, the ideas of the German-Jewish man of letters, thinker, and activist Günther Anders. Anders is one of few philosophers to deal intensely with the moral consequences of Auschwitz and Hiroshima. He can rightly be called the philosopher of the atomic age, and his thinking a philosophy of modern technology. In biting manifestoes, sharp aphorisms, and penetrating essays, in stirring diary notes and political fables, Anders strikes out the age in which we live. Günther Anders (1902, Breslau – 1992, Vienna) studied philosophy with Husserl and Heidegger in Freiburg in the 1920s. Married to Hannah Arendt he worked in Berlin as a journalist and also wrote antifascist literature. He emigrated in 1933, first to Paris, then to the United States, where he worked and lectured at the New School for Social Research. Auschwitz, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki were the major turning points in Anders’ philosophical thinking. He returned to Europe in 1950 and settled in Vienna. He was one of the first to critically examine the Austrian victim myth. Increasingly, his primary interest turned to the issue of the growing predominance of technology in human life. In his main philosophical work Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen (1956) Anders developed what he called a ‘philosophy of discrepancy,’ an analysis of the gap between what we are able to produce and what we are able to imagine. He emerged as a central figure in the European antinuclear movement. He was also a critic of the American aggression in Vietnam. Over a long career stretching almost seventy years, Anders published numerous philosophical essays and diaries, fables, short stories, and poetry. This volume tries to recover and reintroduce the work of "the most neglected German philosopher of the twentieth century" (Jean-Pierre Dupuy). --

My dissertation considers the development of trans-Atlantic debates in the three decades after 1945 concerning the effects of technological advancement. I am particularly interested in a powerful current in postwar thought: the confrontation with "autonomous technology," to borrow Langdon Winner's term. A veritable technological "turn" occurred in European and North American social and political theory in the quarter century after the end of the Second World War. This dissertation focuses on who I regard as the most prescient exemplar of this "turn," the German-Jewish intellectual and anti-nuclear militant Gunther Anders (1902-1992). Still relatively unknown in Anglophone culture, Anders' books and essays addressed some of the most vital issues that confront the modern world, especially the lasting effects of technology on the human condition. He presaged, to some extent, and participated, for several decades, in this broader current of technology critique. In this study, I accent three endeavors interrelated in Anders' writings after 1945: his later philosophical anthropology, his bold revision of the precepts of Marxian thought, and his goal of forging a "concrete philosophy" of technological domination. I argue that Anders understood his fundamental systemic critique of technology to be a necessary, urgent, and critical revision of Marx's critique of industrial production, one suited to a social formation defined by the Fordist-Taylorist labor regime, the Keynesian welfare state, and huge defense industries. Anders' reflections on technology as "destiny" and as the new "Subject of History" attempted to critically overcome the historical limitations of much orthodox Marxist thought, with its focus on ownership of the means of production and class struggle. This work on Anders should contribute to attempts to think historically about forms of social critique that take technology as their object.

The aim of this work is to provide a preliminary analysis of a much more far-reaching investigation into the relationship between technology and philosophy. In the context of the contemporary German thought, the author compares the different positions of Karl Marx, Martin Heidegger, Ernst and Friedrich Jünger, Arnold Gehlen and Gunther Anders. The term “machine” is used precisely to mean that complex material device assembled in the last quarter of the 18th century as a result of the definitive modern refinement of certain fundamental technologies, i.e. metallurgy, precision mechanics and hydraulics. The “machine” discussed here arrived on the scene of man’s history when the processes of spinning and weaving were entrusted to semi-automatic means; when the water wheels used in mills, hitherto always made of wood, were supplanted by the metal levers of the steam engine; and especially when the steam engine was connected to the weaving frames, to the metalworking hammers, and to other machines used to manufacture other machines in an endless reiteration of assemblies and applications, the enormous outcome of which is what subsequently came to be described as “mass production”. The philosophers discussed here were also dealing with the type of machine described above and in their works she we can identify three model images of this idea of machine. These images have been drawn on at various times, also outside the realms of philosophy, and they still provide the backdrop for our knowledge of the machine, which has circulated in a great variety of languages.
