Se le frontiere riflettono i rapporti di potere tra Stati, quale ruolo può avere un confine che separa dittatura e democrazia? E se la democrazia è quella di uno Stato neutrale come la Svizzera, chiamato a confrontarsi e rapportarsi per oltre vent’anni con il fascismo mussoliniano, quel confine rappresenta una netta linea di demarcazione o piuttosto il tratto distintivo di una regione dove le differenze politiche, sociali ed economiche sfumano dando vita a una realtà del tutto peculiare? Negli anni del fascismo l’apparente e invalicabile «linea sottile» che separa Italia e Svizzera sembra frantumarsi sotto i colpi di una dittatura che finisce per metterne in risalto connessioni e intrecci, elevando quella regione ad area di congiunzioni e smerci, politici ed economici: una calamita per rifugiati, antifascisti e trafficanti che trasforma una periferia del potere in un centro di attrazione e azione. Rocamboleschi traffici, avventurosi andirivieni e clamorose azioni contro il regime fanno da sfondo a un originale palcoscenico dove l’incontro-scontro tra fascismo e democrazia, dittatura e libertà, definisce i rapporti che separano Roma da Berna, l’Italia dalla Svizzera, crocevia di contatti con Francia, Germania e una Spagna martoriata dalla guerra civile. Una «linea sottile» che è precario equilibrio tra aiuto e profitto, assistenza e tradimento, salvezza e condanna. Sullo sfondo l’ondivaga politica elvetica verso antifascisti, emigranti economici e profughi razziali, stretti tra ambigue accoglienze e devastanti respingimenti: una «zona franca», quella del confine, campo da gioco per il disordinato apparato poliziesco fascista ma pure fertile terreno di scambi, contatti e riflessioni politiche, destinato a rivelarsi cruciale nel modellare il destino delle future democrazie, nonché dei rinnovati contatti tra l’Italia e la Svizzera del dopoguerra.

Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit dem Leben der jüdischen Flüchtlinge aus Italien in der Schweiz während des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Anliegen der Arbeit ist es zu beschreiben, wie sie dort lebten, was sie taten und welchen Einfluss das Exil auf ihre Zukunftserwartungen in Italien hatte. Der Autor beschäftigt sich zunächst mit dem brisanten Thema der Abweisungen an der Schweizer Grenzen, dem schwierigen Leben in den Flüchtlingslagern sowie mit der Betreuung und Hilfe für die Flüchtlinge. Untersucht wird anschließend das außerordentlich aktive Leben der Flüchtlinge, die sich intensiv mit Politik beschäftigten, bzw. mit der Unterstützung der Partisanen in Italien. Bemerkenswert war auch ihr Engagement in Kultur und Bildung, als Autoren, Publizisten, Lehrer oder Dozenten. Es gab auch Versuche, den deportierten Italienern Hilfe zu leisten. Sehr erfolgreich waren die Bemühungen zu Gunsten der im besetzten Italien verbliebenen Juden, wobei hier eine fruchtbare Allianz zwischen Geldgebern, Flüchtlingen und der italienischen Resistenza zustande kam. Zu beleuchten, wie all diese Aspekte und das Zusammenleben mit den vielen anderen europäischen Juden ihre jüdische und italienische Identität beeinflusste, ist eines der Hauptanliegen der Arbeit.
