The concept of disobedient consciousness and the rebellious Socratic mind that grows out of this book is, above all, a product of Ramin Jahanbegloo’s life meetings with the two apparently contradictory worlds of philosophy and politics. More precisely, it is the result of approaching the public realm in terms of a philosophical quest for truth and justice. This restless quest for truth and justice has a history that continues to bear upon us, however much we choose to ignore it. We can think about the current situation of philosophy by exploring that history. The image of Socrates represents a mid-point between politics and philosophy; the Socratic mind, exemplified by the presence of the public gadfly in history, finds itself at the beginning of a new struggle for truth. The journey to this struggle started with the trial of Socrates, followed by the experiences of Henry David Thoreau, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Albert Camus. But the forging of the rebellious mind and the sustaining of the civic task of philosophy are goals which impose themselves to each of us whenever we are reminded by the urgency of critical thinking in our own dark times. The future of humankind necessarily requires convictions and commitments, but it also requires Socratic rebels, of the mind and of action, who have the courage to swim against the tide. Examining dissent in the history of philosophy, this book will appeal to scholars of political theory and political philosophy and to scholars and students of political and intellectual history.

In 2020, most preachers and congregations were forced into online and hybrid preaching. We had to react quickly. For some, this adventure opened creative forms of preaching—stitches, duets, reels, and VR. For others, it was a season of just getting by—cell phones propped up on books, laptops on dining room tables. We did what we could to proclaim the good news in turbulent times. Five years later, Sigmon invites preachers and congregations to reflect on those experiences as they consider the future of preaching. She helps the reader engage the Gadfly, whose buzzing signals a shift in how we understand relationships, truth, presence, and place in this digital age. Sociologists and historians argue that we are now on the brink of a shift in communication as transformative as the invention of the printing press. No wonder ministry is so challenging right now. Ultimately, this digital age, like previous ages of technological change, presents problems and possibilities to the practice of preaching—and so, ecclesiologically, the shape of the church. What shapes will emerge? Sigmon will empower preachers and congregations to answer that question for themselves through a new media homilecclesiology.

Gadfly In Russia written by Alan Sillitoe and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-12 with Travel categories.

This memoir and literary travelogue from one of the UK’s most esteemed novelists offers rare insight into Cold War–era Russia. In 1967, seeking an escape from his writing life, bestselling British novelist Alan Sillitoe embarks on a road trip from England to Russia via Harwich and Finland in his sturdy Peugeot. During his teens, the author had a cartographic fascination with the Battle of Stalingrad, and decades later he is still armed with intricate maps of the country based on British military intelligence, including one of the road from Leningrad to Moscow to Kiev, which he drew himself. Also in tow are a prismatic compass, binoculars, and a shortwave radio receiver. However, despite being so well prepared, Sillitoe embarks with naiveté about the political precariousness of an Englishman in the eyes of the Soviet regime. After passing through the endless days of a Scandinavian summer and a prolonged stop at a border control checkpoint—with his maps hidden in a secret compartment of the car—Sillitoe arrives in Leningrad. There, he meets George Andjaparidze, a worldly and candid English student who has been assigned by the Writers’ Union to serve as the author’s guide and keep him out of trouble. Though Sillitoe would rather continue his journey solo, Andjaparidze grows on him, and they begin what will become a lasting friendship. As soon as the duo leaves Leningrad, adventures and misadventures ensue. En route to Moscow, Sillitoe and Andjaparidze end up racing a pack of middle-age men in German sports cars partaking in a Berlin-to-Moscow rally. Sillitoe and Andjaparidze’s time in the capital is equally fast-paced, consisting of late nights fueled by vodka, impounded rubles, caviar breakfasts, erudite parties, and a pat on the back from a traffic cop for writing about the working class. A winding drive across western Russia and into Yugoslavia follows, replete with rebellious literature students, a speech on freedom, a visit to Tolstoy’s estate, accusations of espionage, and a near-fatal run-in with a brigade of Red Army tanks. At last the writer and guide reach their destination: Kursk, that fateful place where a Soviet victory in 1943 turned back the Nazi tide. But the story continues long after the road trip ends. Back in England, Andjaparidze visits Sillitoe and the two are caught up in a controversy surrounding the defection of the Soviet writer Anatoly Kuznetsov. Written from the perspective of another trip to Russia forty years later (Sillitoe was invited in 2005 by the British Council to return to Moscow), this travelogue provides a rare and intimate look at the country’s history, a compassionate understanding of its troubled ideology, and a frank portrayal of its undeniable lure.

Welcome to the vibrant and whimsical land of Femeroon, where time seems to pulsate with an energy all its own, moving so swiftly even the fastest hummingbird would struggle to keep up. This enchanting realm is unlike any other woven from the threads of fleeting moments. In Femeroon, every creature—be it the industrious dung beetle scurrying along with a load of dung, the melodious bird flitting through the trees, or the tiny, colourful bugs darting about in the air—lives under an extraordinary truth: each has a mere 24 hours to live. Here, each day is not just a series of hours; it's a lifetime packed with experiences, joys, and sorrows, urging all to savour every fleeting second. The world sparkles with vibrant urgency as creatures hustle to explore, connect, and leave their mark. The landscape reflects this intensity, with dazzling flora blooming and fading within hours, creating a kaleidoscope of colours and scents that leaves an indelible impression. Into this whirlwind of life steps Gardiff, a character with an insatiable zest for living. From the moment his wings stretch out at dawn, glinting in the morning light, Gardiff is ready to seize the day. He's not just any gadfly; he's an enthusiast, a social butterfly of sorts—except, well, he's a gadfly with an artist’s soul and a wanderer’s heart. Femeroon reveals a breathtaking patchwork of meadows, enchanted forests, and babbling brooks. Life bustles in myriad forms—furry creatures dart between the underbrush, birds flit overhead, and insects hum busily. The air is alive with sound—the melodic hum of wings, the cheerful chatter of creatures, and the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. Each moment is a reminder of the fleeting nature of time, urging all beings to make the most of the day ahead. Next is The Art of the Bite; something that Gardiff finds utterly fascinating and downright cheeky. With a grin and a twinkle in his eye, Gardiff dives into the nitty-gritty of the gadfly's infamous bite. “Oh, my deadly! Nearly forgot the highlight of our existence: The bite,” Gardiff chortles. “It's our claim to fame, isn’t it? Female gadflies, bless them, have mouthparts specifically designed to pierce the skin of our unsuspecting hosts. We're not like those dainty mosquitoes who just nudge their way in; no, we carve our paths with the finesse of a master chef. Think of it as a surgical procedure, really. Once we've tapped into a blood vessel, we inject our spit, which is loaded with anticoagulants to keep the good stuff flowing. This ensures we get a splendid, uninterrupted feast, though it leaves our hosts with a bit of an itch—a small price to pay, if you ask me.” Gardiff’s tone turns more serious as he continues, “Our bites aren’t just a minor annoyance; they can be quite perilous. We're purveyors of diseases like tularaemia, splenic fever, and loa loa filariasis. This dual nature of being both fascinating and hazardous has kept scientists intrigued for ages.” So, let us now step into the enchanting world of Femeroon with "The Gadfly" by Dandy Ahuruonye. In this whimsical land, time moves at a breathtaking pace, and every creature has just 24 hours to live a lifetime. Join Gardiff, a gadfly with an insatiable zest for life, as he embarks on a whirlwind adventure from dawn to dusk. "The Gadfly" is a celebration of life's brief but brilliant moments, a tale that will leave you enchanted and inspired. Don't miss this extraordinary story of adventure, wonder, and the surprises of living in the moment. But why? Because our life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away!
