Reforms Of Christian Life In Sixteenth Century Italy written by Querciolo Mazzonis and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-03 with History categories.

Reforms of Christian Life presents a new narrative of the role of the Barnabites and Angelics, the Ursulines and the Somascans (founded in Northern Italy in the 1530s by Battista da Crema, Angela Merici, and Girolamo Miani) within sixteenth-century Italian reform movements. While historiography has considered these companies under the category of ‘Catholic Reformation,’ this book argues that they promoted an ‘unconventional’ view of perfection and of the Church that was alternative to both Roman Catholicism and Lutheranism and through which they wanted to reform society, rather than the ecclesiastical institution. By highlighting the complex articulation of perceptions of ‘Christian life,’ and by exploring neglected connections among devout milieus, Mazzonis considers the sodalities in continuity with a fifteenth-century ascetic-mystical current and in relation to contemporary institutes such as the Jesuits and the Oratorians, irenic reforming circles like that of Juan de Valdés, and post-Tridentine ecclesiastical reformers including Charles Borromeo. This volume shows that reforming trends were more varied and fluid than previously thought and contributes to cultural and gender analyses of the religious mentality of the period. Reforms of Christian Life is a useful tool for students and scholars of medieval and early modern religious and cultural history.

Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,500 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, from theology; churches and denominations; patristic scholarship; and the bible; to the church calendar and its organization; popes; archbishops; other church leaders; saints; and mystics. In this new edition, great efforts have been made to increase and strengthen coverage of non-Anglican denominations (for example non-Western European Christianity), as well as broadening the focus on Christianity and the history of churches in areas beyond Western Europe. In particular, there have been extensive additions with regards to the Christian Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australasia. Significant updates have also been included on topics such as liturgy, Canon Law, recent international developments, non-Anglican missionary activity, and the increasingly important area of moral and pastoral theology, among many others. Since its first appearance in 1957, the ODCC has established itself as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, and an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.

Published in conjunction with an exhibit which opened in Venice in 1996 and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the first part of 1997. The exhibit organizers aimed to show Tiepolo as one of the presiding geniuses of the European imagination. In essays and entries on every work shown, the text illuminates his formation; his mastery of mythological and poetic subjects; his religious pictures; his excursions into portraiture and studies of ideal heads; and the process by which he proceeded from initial ideas--small- scale sketches--to large canvases and frescoes. Beautifully produced, the volume makes a stunning impact, and will have to suffice for those who can't make it to the exhibit itself. Exactly 450 years after the solemn closure of the Council of Trent on 4 December 1563, scholars from diverse regional, disciplinary and confessional backgrounds convened in Leuven to reflect upon the impact of this Council, not only in Europe but also beyond. Their conclusions are to be found in these three impressive volumes. Bridging different generations of scholarship, the authors reassess in a first volume Tridentine views on the Bible, theology and liturgy, as well as their reception by Protestants, deconstructing many myths surviving in scholarship and society alike. They also deal with the mechanisms 'Rome' developed to hold a grip on the Council's implementation. The second volume analyzes the changes in local ecclesiastical life, initiated by bishops, orders and congregations, and the political strife and confessionalisation accompanying this reform process. The third and final volume examines the afterlife of Trent in arts and music, as well as in the global impact of Trent through missions.

The volume contains studies by eleven distinguished scholars, concerning changes in ethical and religious consciousness during this important era of Western culture — themes consonant with the scholarship of Charles Trinkaus. It begins with three general essays: the Renaissance discovery of human creativity (William Bouwsma), the Renaissance and Western pragmatism (Jerry Bentley), and the new philosophical perspective (F. Edward Cranz). The remaining contributors deal with similar issues in Petrarch (Ronald Witt), Nicholas of Cusa (Morimichi Watanabe), Lorenzo Valla (Salvatore Camporeale), Marsilio Ficino (Michael Allen and Brian Copenhaver), Savonarola (Donald Weinstein), Battista Carioni (Paul Grendler), and Calvin (Heiko Oberman). The volume opens with a tribute to Trinkaus by Paul Oskar Kristeller and concludes with bibliographies of Trinkaus's publications and of works on Valla in English (Pauline Watts and Thomas Izbicki).
