This book offers new findings on the impact of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution and related processes. Galaxies are astronomical objects composed of stars, gas, and dark matter. The main pathway for galaxy evolution in the currently accepted model for structure growth is through interactions and mergers, or the process in which multiple galaxies interact, collide, and end up as one larger galaxy. Galaxy interactions and mergers are also considered to drive various processes pertaining to galaxy evolution, such as star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, and chemical evolution. As such, not only are merging galaxy systems important to understand galaxy structure growth in a cosmological context, they are also unique laboratories to study evolutionary processes taking place in galaxies. However, despite their importance, the relative role of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution is still heavily contested. One reason for this is difficulty in identifying merger galaxies in observational data. Many different methods have been adopted for merger galaxy identification, but none of them are perfect. Moreover, the use of differing selection methods can result in widely different samples, which can alter statistical results. As such, a novel, robust method for merger identification is required to deepen our understanding of galaxy mergers. In this book, we introduce new methods to identify galaxy mergers from observational data. The first method combines the use of visual identification—both of optical and kinematic images—with spectroscopic pair identification. The second is machine learning based, using a training method called fine-tuning, an application of transfer learning. A pre-trained model on galaxy images is further fine-tuned using a sample of synthetic galaxy images, to make a classifier for merger identification. Using samples identified by our methods, the author conducts three studies: the impact of mergers on galaxy chemical evolution, the effect of galaxy local environment on merging activity, and the connection between mergers and AGN activity. This book is mainly intended for astrophysicists, particularly those studying galaxies, however is open for all to read.

The 186th IAU Symposium came at an exciting and perhaps even historic time for extragalactic astronomy. New spacecraft observations plumbed the depths of the Universe out to redshifts of five, while revealing astounding details of nearby galaxies and AGN at intermediate redshifts. Theoretical ideas on structure formation, together with results from detailed numerical modeling, created a comprehensive framework for modeling the formation of galaxies and the transformation of galaxies by interactions and mergers. All these strands came together at the Symposium, as participants glimpsed a developing synthesis highlighting galactic encounters and their role in the history of the Universe. This volume offers professional astronomers, including PhD students, an overview of the rapidly advancing subject of galaxy interactions at low and high redshifts.

This book addresses the mechanism of enrichment of heavy elements in galaxies, a long standing problem in astronomy. It mainly focuses on explaining the origin of heavy elements by performing state-of-the-art, high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of dwarf galaxies. In this book, the author successfully develops a model of galactic chemodynamical evolution by means of which the neutron star mergers can be used to explain the observed abundance pattern of the heavy elements synthesized by the rapid neutron capture process, such as europium, gold, and uranium in the Local Group dwarf galaxies. The book argues that heavy elements are significant indicators of the evolutionary history of the early galaxies, and presents theoretical findings that open new avenues to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies based on the abundance of heavy elements in metal-poor stars.

"This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference held in October 2006 in Sintra, Portugal, on the recent results from the deepest astronomical observations of the Universe. Focused on the latest observational developments in galaxy and structure formation and evolution, as given by the use of the most powerful telescopes working throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, the conference assembled some of the most active researchers in the field. The ninety-eight contributions included in this volume represent the state-of-the-art of research covering such topics as: the first billion years of galaxy formation, probing the reionization epoch, obscured galaxy populations and their role in galaxy evolution, early AGN activity, the star formation and mass assembly history of the Universe, massive galaxies at high-redshift and the metallicity history of galaxies. A particular emphasis is given to the unification of the different views given by observations at different wavelengths, making the books a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students interested in the exploration of the distant universe." -- publisher's website.

Merging Processes In Galaxy Clusters written by L. Feretti and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-18 with Science categories.
Mergers are the mechanisms by which galaxy clusters are assembled through the hierarchical growth of smaller clusters and groups. Major cluster mergers are the most energetic events in the Universe since the Big Bang. Many of the observed properties of clusters depend on the physics of the merging process. These include substructure, shock, intra cluster plasma temperature and entropy structure, mixing of heavy elements within the intra cluster medium, acceleration of high-energy particles, formation of radio halos and the effects on the galaxy radio emission. This book reviews our current understanding of cluster merging from an observational and theoretical perspective, and is appropriate for both graduate students and researchers in the field.

Studying Distant Galaxies A Handbook Of Methods And Analyses written by Francois Hammer and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-15 with Science categories.
Distant galaxies encapsulate the various stages of galaxy evolution and formation from over 95% of the development of the universe. As early as twenty-five years ago, little was known about them, however since the first systematic survey was completed in the 1990s, increasing amounts of resources have been devoted to their discovery and research. This book summarises for the first time the numerous techniques used for observing, analysing, and understanding the evolution and formation of these distant galaxies. In this rapidly expanding research field, this text is an every-day companion handbook for graduate students and active researchers. It provides guidelines in sample selection, imaging, integrated spectroscopy and 3D spectroscopy, which help to avoid the numerous pitfalls of observational and analysis techniques in use in extragalactic astronomy. It also paves the way for establishing relations between fundamental properties of distant galaxies. At each step, the reader is assisted with numerous practical examples and ready-to-use methodology to help understand and analyse research.François Hammer worked initially in general relativity and made the first modelling of gravitational lenses prior to their spectroscopic confirmation. Following this, he became co-leader of the first complete survey of distant galaxies, the Canada-France-Redshift Survey. This led to the discovery of the strong decrease of the cosmic star formation density measured from UV light as z=1, which, alongside Hector Flores, they confirmed as bolometric and dust independent. With Mathieu Puech, they then pioneered the 3D spectroscopy of distant galaxies, leading to a major increase of understanding of the dynamic state of distant galaxies evidenced by the scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation. This led them to propose, with the addition to the team of Myriam Rodrigues, that galactic disks may survive or be rebuilt in gas-rich mergers, a scenario that is consistent with contemporary cosmological simulations. Besides extensive observational experience, the authors have led, or are leading, several instruments implemented or to be implemented at the largest telescopes, including VLT/Giraffe, VLT/X-shooter, VLT/MOONS and E-ELT/MOSAIC. They have also developed several observational techniques in adaptive optics, and in sky subtraction for integral field units and fibre instruments.
