Warfare and dislocation are obvious features of the break-up of the late Roman West, but this crucial period of change was characterized also by communication and diplomacy. The great events of the late antique West were determined by the quieter labours of countless envoys, who travelled between emperors, kings, generals, high officials, bishops, provincial councils, and cities. This book examines the role of envoys in the period from the establishment of the first 'barbarian kingdoms' in the West, to the eve of Justinian's wars of re-conquest. It shows how ongoing practices of Roman imperial administration shaped new patterns of political interaction in the novel context of the earliest medieval states. Close analysis of sources with special interest in embassies offers insight into a variety of genres: chronicles, panegyrics, hagiographies, letters and epitaph. This study makes a significant contribution to the developing field of ancient and medieval communications.

The period from the fifth century to the eighth century witnessed massive political, social and religious change in Europe. Geographical and historical thought, long rooted to Roman ideologies, had to adopt the new perspectives of late antiquity. In the light of expanding Christianity and the evolution of successor kingdoms in the West, new historical discourses emerged which were seminal in the development of medieval historiography. Taking their lead from Orosius in the early fifth century, Latin historians turned increasingly to geographical description, as well as historical narrative, to examine the world around them. This book explores the interdependence of geographical and historical modes of expression in four of the most important writers of the period: Orosius, Jordanes, Isidore of Seville and the Venerable Bede. It offers important readings of each by arguing that the long geographical passages with which they were introduced were central to their authors' historical assumptions and arguments.

Anhand der barbarischen gens der Westgoten, ihrer Wanderung und zweifachen Staatenbildung wird in der vorliegenden Publikation untersucht, welche Erkenntnisse Geld und Münzen als wirtschaftshistorische Quellen zu Fragestellungen der Ethnogenese eines germanischen Verbandes und seiner Herrschaftselite zwischen dem 5. und 7. Jahrhundert liefern können. Die Analyse reicht von den frühen "pseudoimperialen Prägungen" des gallischen Regnum Tolosanum bis zur eigenständigen Münz- und Geldwirtschaft des Regnum Toletanum auf der iberischen Halbinsel, wodurch die Herausbildung und geographische Transformation von Identitäten in Abgrenzung zu anderen Nachfolgestaaten des Römischen Reiches und innerhalb dieser beiden regna betrachtet werden kann.

Actes du Congrès International, Museu d’Història de Catalunya (Barcelone, 12-13 novembre 2010) En 2010, le 1600e anniversaire de l’élection d’Athaulf comme roi des Wisigoths a été célébré. Les vicissitudes de ce personnage historique et de son règne éphémère (410-415 ap. J.-C.) sont un exemple éloquent d’une période caractérisée par un changement rapide de la géographie du pouvoir et par une mobilité extraordinaire des personnes, des objets et des idées dans un contexte de multiculturalisme croissant. Cette éphéméride constitue donc une invitation aux historiens, philologues, archéologues et anthropologues à explorer les multiples matérialisations des échanges et interactions culturels entre « Romains » et « barbares », ainsi que de nombreux autres aspects sociaux, politiques, économiques et culturels au début du Ve siècle en Pannonie, Italie, Gaule et Espagne. Les contributions incluses dans ce volume analysent la coexistence des « Barbares » et des « Romains » dans un contexte topographique et culturel spécifique : les villes occidentales du Ve siècle. Véritable point nodal de la civilisation gréco-romaine, la ville de l’Antiquité tardive devient un scénario marquant des processus de transformation politique et idéologique de l’époque. Cependant, les activités d’un des principaux acteurs, les populations d’origine barbare, sont souvent difficiles à encadrer : dans ce contexte spécifique, leurs absences dans certains domaines peuvent être aussi importantes que les présences attestées, voire plus.
