In his forties, Julian Peale is getting a fresh start. Formerly in Navy intelligence, hes cast his lot in the New York art world. Hes landed a job with the venerable Medici Studios, which also contracts with the NYPD and FBI. On a winter morning, theyve run a sting operation to track Russian art smugglers. The caper goes awry, but an odd bit of evidence remains: four art catalogs with graffiti markings. So begins Gallery Pieces, a story that will keep readers guessing until the end. Peale follows the clues where they lead. He meets a heavy at the Miami Art Fair, chases a mystery bidder at Merriweathers auction in Manhattan, and crosses paths with a Brooklyn performance artist whose pranks are dangerously entangled in the Russian intrigues. Step by step, Peale enters an art world permeated not only by the avant-garde, but by the Russian mob, hackers, forgers, hipsters, and the history of art looting in Europe during WWII. When Peale least expects it, the catalogs lead him on another trail. He is drawn into a long-forgotten mystery surrounding his grandfather, Maxwell Peale, who had been a monuments man, a soldier who helped reclaim art looted by the Nazis. Peale is on his way to discovering paintings stolen in postwar Europe. Finding the culprits, however, brings him closer to home than hed imagined.

1. Think outside the square! You've probably heard statements like 'thinking outside the square'?I write on the assumption that most readers are painters. But I have had one or two potters, subscribe to the newsletter I write. The potters were looking for new ideas. They could get information from within potting circles. There's more of a chance of a breakthrough if a search is made elsewhere. That's thinking outside the square. To get something really useful the potter will need to translate what is written. So it becomes something that suits their own situation. We all translate what is read into something useful or nothing happens.I remember reading, quite a long time ago, about Picasso. He decided that he'd like to work with clay and sought out some potters. All were keen to demonstrate to the famous artist what to do and techniques.Picasso would have none of this.He shut himself in a shed for a week or so.When he re-appeared the potters were amazed. He developed new ways of working with clay and created new forms. They could only have come about through Picasso's unique vision. He did not want to be side-tracked by working in the way of others. Before he'd had a chance to develop his own approach. He was really stepping outside the (ceramic) square.Picasso made discoveries that were unlikely had this not been done.Let's stay with the potting idea a bit more.Because clay can be turned on a wheel it's possible to make similar pieces.Selling similar pieces is a common problem for potters, but not painters. But reproduction prints are a parallel. Many potters produce two lines, production pieces and one-off works.Production pieces are often utilitarian, such as mugs, cups, saucers or jugs. They're "bread and butter‟ for a potter, and most time is spent making them. Many are the same so it's possible to make them quickly in large quantities. This is of course essential as they're mostly sold for quite low prices. The more creative work is the artistic output of the potter. This takes less total time, but considerably more than a production piece. These "one-off‟ items are also more highly priced. Some potters' artistic work is sought after and they sell in galleries like artists. In my gallery-owing days, I promoted painters, but had one potter. In his case in my gallery, the one-offs easily outsold the production pieces. We only sold a few of the production pieces, and they were always cheap. With one potter my experience is limited and may not apply elsewhere. This suggests a potter have different outlets for different kinds of work.Production pieces at places where there was a likelihood of many sales.Tourist resorts, shopping centres, markets, where many people congregate.One-offs at prestige locations with exclusiveness, status and higher price.Perhaps potters do this but artists can do the same as well!Have production artworks and your creative works too, just like the potter. There are well-known and successful artists who've gone down this pathway. They're looked down on for this, but they are laughing all the way to the bank.Recently I met a printmaker, whom I hadn't seen for several years. He is technically superb and images complex and charged with symbolism. He is very serious about his art and "making it‟ critically. In fact he has already achieved quite a deal in this regard. So I naturally asked him how his career was progressing. He's still doing the style of work I knew as in the previous paragraph. But he and a friend have been producing prints for sale to hotels and motels. They're quick and easy to make, sold cheaply AND he finds them fun to do.An aspect of this is the artist and friend; often collaborate on the same work. They use a nom-de-plume so there's no worry about who actually did a work. This also means there are no repercussions where his normal work is sold.

The biggest question in the world of art and culture concerns the return of property taken without consent. Throughout history, conquerors or colonial masters have taken artefacts from subjugated peoples, who now want them returned from museums and private collections in Europe and the USA. The controversy rages on over the Elgin Marbles, and has been given immediacy by figures such as France's President Macron, who says he will order French museums to return hundreds of artworks acquired by force or fraud in Africa, and by British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has pledged that a Labour government would return the Elgin Marbles to Greece. Elsewhere, there is a debate in Belgium about whether the Africa Museum, newly opened with 120,000 items acquired mainly by armed forces in the Congo, should close. Although there is an international convention dated 1970 that deals with the restoration of artefacts stolen since that time, there is no agreement on the rules of law or ethics which should govern the fate of objects forcefully or lawlessly acquired in previous centuries. Who Owns History? delves into the crucial debate over the Elgin Marbles, but also offers a system for the return of cultural property based on human rights law principles that are being developed by the courts. It is not a legal text, but rather an examination of how the past can be experienced by everyone, as well as by the people of the country of origin.

Having started to show interest in portrait sketching and various types of paintings since very young as hobbies, the artist started more seriously in early 2000 in the World of Art, and decided on abstract paintings and made “Batik, Floral & Nature” her genre, and she has since been constantly developing her abstract arts to refl ect the classique, artistic and graceful batik features in her art pieces. Using acrylics & mixed on canvas, the artist choice of medium, the artist opts for “Moza” a combination of Molly & Zalani as her art initial on each of her art pieces, instead of her full name, and registered MozaKlasik as her trademark / branding.

Geographies Of Post Industrial Place Memory And Heritage written by Mark Alan Rhodes II and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-23 with Business & Economics categories.

All industrialization is deeply rooted within the specific geographies in which it took place, and echoes of previous industrialization continue to reverberate in these places through to the modern day. This book investigates the overlap of memory and the impacts of industrialization within today’s communities and the senses of place and heritage that grew alongside and in reaction to the growth of mines, mills, and factories. The economic and social change that accompanied the unchecked accumulation of wealth and exploitation of labor as the industrial revolution spread throughout the world has numerous lasting impacts on the socioeconomics of today. Likewise, the planet itself is now reeling. The memory and heritage of these processes reach into the communities that owe the industrial revolution their existence, but these populations also often suffered adverse impacts to their health and environment through the large-scale and rapid extraction of natural resources and production of goods. Through the themes of memory, community, and place; working post-industrial landscapes; and the de-romanticization of industrial pasts, this book examines the endurance and decline of these communities, the spatial processes of industrial byproducts, and the memory and heritage of industrialization and its legacies. While based in the traditions of geography, this collection also draws upon and will be of great interest to students and scholars of cultural anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history, architecture, civil engineering, and heritage, memory, museum, and tourism studies. Using global examples, the authors provide a uniquely geographic understanding to industrial heritage across the spaces, places, and memories of industrial development.
