Thousands of year ago in the Mediterranean Sea a decades long war is raging. Philip has already been a soldier, a sergeant of marines and a slave rower who escaped in a revolt. Now he is an officer on a fighting galley. As the war continues he fights in sea battles where the enemy is starting to use massive galleys that seem impossible to fight against. Then suddenly until there is a truce, and there are great hopes that the war might be over.During the truce Philip is sent to take part in an attack on a pirate stronghold. He personally leads a near impossible attack up a precipitous cliff path to overrun the stronghold. Hailed as a hero he finds himself mixing with the rich and powerful, and sees again the woman he lusts after. She and Philip have been lovers before, but her rich family controls her closely, keeping Philip away. The truce collapses and fighting on land and at sea rages again. Philip and other marines are sent to help the army lay siege to an enemy held town. A tunnel is dug under its walls, Philip leads a party through it into the town to open the gates for his army to flood in. Once again he is hailed as a hero and receives a large reward.Although Philip is now regarded as one of his people's greatest fighters he loses close friends in the war, even his original galley falls to the ravages of time and war and is broken up.Feted by senior officers and the rich, Philip tries to avoid the intrigues that go with such people. He invests his money with the widow of a friend. Unusually she has taken over her husband's merchant business and promises Philip she can make him a lot of money. With his new fame and a promotion Philip wonders how far he might go in the navy, and although he wants an end to the war it does seem to give him unlimited opportunities for what he enjoys, adventure and wealth.

Phillip is a soldier in a Mediterranean land thousands of years ago. Although born the son of a farmer, he enjoys being a soldier more. To earn more money he leaves his family and enlists as a marine on a fighting galley. The galley captain is an aristocrat too arrogant to learn his trade. The galley master is a pot-bellied, stubby legged merchant who constantly argues with the officer. The galley sergeant is a brand new marine who bribed his way into the position. In Phillip's first major sea fight the officer and sergeant are killed and Phillip finds himself instantly promoted to galley sergeant. A new officer is posted to captain the galley, and under him things improve. Enemy galleys are captured and the Cats-Head crew gets part of the bounty paid for their capture. Phillip is sent on an ill-fated expedition to capture an enemy port. Captured he becomes a slave. Now he is a rower, chained to a bench and worked to exhastion. In a sea fight his galley is rammed and sunk, but he manages to survive. On land Phillip is captured and sold back into slavery. He is now one of the rowers for a king who builds and sells war galleys, while secretly trying to develop terrible weapons. One night the slaves break out of their compound and attack the king's palace. Seizing a boat Phillip and some others sail for home. One of the freed slaves is an officer and takes Phillip to his home. There Phillip mixes with the aristocracy for the first time, and finds there is a woman lusting after him. This remarkable memoir tells of the miseries of Jean Marteilhe of Bergerac, a Protestant condemned to the Galleys of France for his Religion, who, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, attempted, like so many French Huguenots, to escape to the more sympathetic Protestant countries bordering France. In 1700, heading through the Ardennes towards Charleroi, he was captured by French Dragoons and thrown into gaol.In 1707 he then found himself, like so many Huguenots, condemned to serve in the French Mediterranean galleys. Little is known of life as a galley slave on these oared vessels. Certainly no accounts have come down to us from ancient Greece or Rome, though a little is known from the time of the Crusades. So Marteilhes racy account represents the only authentic record of the miseries of a galley slave who experienced all the horrors of whips and chains and the dreaded bastinado—foot whipping. For six years he pulled his oar, often seeing friends and co-religionists lashed—sometimes to death—under the whips of the overseers. He himself sustained almost fatal injuries in a bloody engagement with the British off the mouth of the Thames before being released under a general amnesty in 1713.Galley Slave brings vividly to life the sufferings and conditions on the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century galleys and is a unique and unforgettable account.

The development of the Spanish Navy in the early modern Mediterranean triggered a change in the balance of political and economic power for the coastal populations of the Hispanic Monarchy. The establishment of new permanent squadrons, endowed with very broad jurisdictional powers, was the cause of many conflicts with the local authorities and had a direct influence on the economic and production activities of the region. Manuel Lomas analyzes the progressive consolidation of these institutions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, their influence on the mechanisms of justice and commerce, and how they contributed to the reconfiguration of the jurisdictional system that governed the maritime trade in the Mediterranean.
