This book delves deep into the hidden population of former gang members who share their positive and negative experiences of being gang members. Their stories of violence, hopelessness, despair, and loneliness also offer a seed of hope – they contain the building blocks for prevention. By understanding why they each turned to gangs, how they turned to gangs, and what went wrong for some along their pathways during childhood, as well as how and why they chose to leave the gang lifestyle, we can begin to put the pieces together and understand tools for gang prevention. Schools are in the unique position to become an oasis or a safe haven for a child in a world that does not otherwise feel safe to them. School staff members can step in and become consistent people in a child’s life. They can help to identify at-risk youth and intervene, facilitating a change in path away from gang membership. This book discusses how schools and staff can be instrumental in gang prevention and outlines warning signs and risk and protective factors for gang involvement. It also talks about components of gang prevention programs in schools. Additional topics explored include: Theories of Gang Involvement Lack of Family Consistency: Relating Attachment Theory with Gang Involvement “Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Unity:" Gangs as Replacement Family "No Other Option:" The Role of Social Environment "Death, Jail, or a Turnaround:" Making the Decision to Disengage A Piece About Trauma-Informed Practice Authored by a school social worker who has an insider's perspective on working in a school, Gang Prevention in Schools is a useful resource that gives a humanistic view of former gang members. The book will engage readers in the fields of psychology, social work, education and educational administration, and criminal justice, as well as have potential appeal to a lay audience due to the richness of the stories and interviews.

Our schools & law enforcement agencies tend to increase the influence of youth gangs. The youth gangs of today are much different & more powerful than those of even ten years ago; they are crippling cities & are beginning to harm the suburbs. This book, by an educator with over twenty-five years experience working with gangs, provides unique answers about how - with little added cost - our inner city schools can reduce the impact of gangs. Suburban gangs are seen to be different from inner-city gangs in some important ways. What young persons find in their families, neighborhoods, and schools clearly has an impact on the making and unmaking of gang members. Existing theories and intervention strategies intended to suppress gangs or lure youngsters from gangs are found to be ineffective.

America's Suburban Gangs is the first book written about youth gangs in suburbs and schools. Based on interviews with over 400 boys and girls between the ages of ten and twenty, the author offers a vivid portrayal of their lives in and around gangs. It chronicles the way in which suburban youths become involved with gangs, learn about committing crimes and violent acts, and gradually begin to question their loyalty to gang life.

Schools cannot approach the problem of street gangs with the same strategies as law enforcement agencies, but rather must create a nurturing environment for all students, where success in school and life becomes the only attractive option for gang members. Street gangs represent the racial, cultural, and economic diversity of American society. Gangs are similar to other organizations in that they have a name, claim territory, have a continuous membership, and distinguish themselves from other groups. However, to qualify as a gang, the organization must be involved in criminal activity. Gang involvement can range from simple admiration or identification with someone who is in a gang to classification by a law enforcement agency as a documented full-participant. The following factors contribute to gang involvement: (1) power; (2) pride; (3) prestige; (4) peer pressure; (5) adventure; (6) self-preservation; (7) money; and (8) limited life options. Schools must avoid the unproductive approach of attempting to identify and discipline gang members based on stereotyped behaviors. A positive educational approach to preventing gang involvement should include the following components: (1) staff development; (2) values education; (3) school climate; (4) cultural inclusion; and (5) community involvement. A list of 24 references is appended. (FMW)
