This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... Part ll CHAPTER XIV COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS FOR LADY GARDENERS IN GREAT BRITAIN The following syllabuses of British colleges and schools are submitted for the use of ladies interested in gardening. It is hoped that they may assist all those who, in England or abroad, have the management of such training centres. By means of them it will be easy to compare notes as to the various methods of imparting practical information; the form in which foreign syllabuses are staged may inspire fresh ideas. I should like to add that I do not, of course, consider what I am able to give of these particulars as in any way comprehensive; but it has been my endeavour to insert only details of colleges and schools that have been in existence some time. I have received the syllabuses and many interesting notes through the kindness of those who have at heart the wish that ladies should succeed in the profession of horticulture. THE THATCHAM FRUIT AND FLOWER FARM SCHOOL OF GARDENING, HENWICK, NEAR NEWBURY Principals; Lily Hughes Jones, F.R.H.S.; Mary Peers, F.R.H.S 1st Class Certificates and Bee Experts) The farm is situated on high ground in the Kennet Valley, facing south, one and three-quarter miles from Newbury, two miles from Thatcham Station, about twelve miles from Reading, and one-quarter mile from the Bath Road. The residence is a roomy old farm-house, facing south: Its position is thoroughly healthy, 400 feet above sea level. An old-fashioned garden lies to one side of the house, and four acres of land on the other side, on which the main crops are grown, consisting of hardy fruits, perennials, and other crops. The farm is conducted as a market garden for business purposes. Students will thus see practical work--the object being to provide outdoor work...

Women and Gardens celebrates the achievements of women in gardening and horticultural history. Today, women outnumber men in landscape architecture and related fields. But for centuries, male historians overlooked women's important contributions to horticulture. During her long and distinguished career, feminist historian Susan Groag Bell (1926-2015) published several seminal works on women's place in history and how it had been written out. Upon her death, Bell left behind a fascinating, unfinished project, exploring women's roles as gardeners and founders of horticultural schools. Now, horticultural historian Judith M. Taylor has completed Bell's work. Women and Gardens expands upon Bell's original research and features new material from Taylor-including a full chapter on the accomplishments of women flower breeders and a comprehensive listing of women rose breeders in Australia. In Women and Gardens, Taylor and Bell offer gardening and horticulture enthusiasts an exclusive look into the previously unexplored world of women and gardens. Order your copy today. ----- Praise for Judith M. Taylor's Work "For many years, the distinguished pioneer feminist historian, Susan Groag Bell, was fascinated with women's involvement with gardens, gardeners themselves and also as teachers through the schools they established for other women. Over the years she had worked on this project but hadn't completed it at the time of her death. Now the superb horticultural historian, Judith Taylor, using and expanding Susan's material, has created a joint work devoted to the extremely interesting and important world of women and gardens." - Dr. Peter Stansky, Frances and Charles Field Professor of History, Emeritus, Stanford University "One of the most important studies in garden plant history in English for a long time...for anyone interested in the history of garden plants and plantmanship it is essential reading." - Noel Kingsbury on Taylor's Visions of Loveliness ----- About the Cover The famous early twentieth century artist Childe Hassam painted Celia Thaxter's garden in the Isles of Shoals off the Maine coast in 1896. Thaxter was a noted poet in her day. She ran an hotel on Appledore Island and planted many flowers to decorate the hotel's rooms. Writers and artists spent their summers at the resort.

Excerpt from In My Lady's Garden There has ever been a halo of romance around my Lady's Garden. Since the ancient days of chivalry, when brave knights and fair ladies paced in "pleached waves" amidst gilliflowers and rosemary - throughout the centuries in which parterres were surrounded by ancient yews cut into many quaint devices - until the present time, women have not failed to love flowers, and to tend and cherish them as they knew how. But the knowledge of horticulture has increased during the last quarter of a century with great rapidity, and with it the interest which we all now take in our gardens. Moreover, the opening of China and Japan to the Western world, the construction of the Suez Canal, and the power of steam, have combined to enable us to bring safely from the ends of the earth many valuable plants which were quite unknown to our forefathers. The gardens of the twentieth century, therefore, should be more beautiful than ever; and to those who love their flowers, and take a personal interest in them, this book is offered. Modernist texts and writings of protest have until now received most of the critical attention of literary scholars of the First World War. Popular literature with its penchant for predictable storylines, melodramatic prose, and patriotic rhetoric has been much-maligned or at the very least ignored. Boys in Khaki, Girls in Print: Women's Literary Responses to the Great War redresses the balance. It turns the spotlight on the novels and memoirs of women writers - many of whom are now virtually forgotten - that appealed to a British reading public hungry for amusement, news, and above all, encouragement in the face of uncertainty and grief. The writers of 1914-18 had powerful models for interpreting their war, as a consideration of texts from the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 shows. They were also bolstered by wartime publishing practices that reinforced the sense that their books, whether fiction or non-fiction, were not simply 'light' entertainment but a powerful agents of propaganda. Generously illustrated, Boys in Khaki, Girls in Print is a scholarly yet accessible illumination of a hitherto untapped resource of women's writing and is an important new contribution to the study of the literature of the Great War.
