Tripoli, as the northern focus of three great caravan routes, was a natural gateway to the Sahara. The American traveller, Charles Wellington Furlong visited that 'most native of the barbary capitals' in 1904, before the advent of modern communications changed the centuries-old pace of life. His inquiring mind and fluent pen present the reader with a most colourful and absorbing account of this peculiarly individual North African city. More than that, the author extends his sphere of interest to take in the adjacent desert and its inhabitants. In order to discover the hardships and dangers of desert travel for himself, he made a series of journeys through this 'great land of sand and silence', accompanied by three Arab guides. He trekked across the scorching desert sand by day and slept under the feathered branches of oasis date palms at night. One day, he encountered a vast caravan of richly laden camels with their Arab traders; on another he glimpsed the shadowy forms of bandits trailing him through a rocky ravine. On one occasion he barely escaped with his life. The reader will find much of interest in this compelling narrative.

Excerpt from The Gateway to the Sahara: Adventures and Observations in Tripoli Nowhere in Northern Africa can the life Of town, oasis, and desert be found more native and typical than in Tripolitania. How long before the primitive customs of this people will give way before the progressive aggression of some Christian power, and the picture Of an ancient patriarchal life be tarnished with the cheap veneer of a commercial vanguard, may be answered any morning by the cable news of the daily paper. The great dynamic forces of modern civiliza tion cause events to march with astounding swiftness. Tripoli, in Barbary, is already in the eye of Europe; to-morrow the Tripoli of to-day may have vanished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Box Of Sand written by Charles Stephenson and has been published by Tattered Flag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-19 with History categories.

This is the first book in the English language to offer an analysis of a conflict that, in so many ways, raised the curtain on the Great War. In September 1911, Italy declared war on the once mighty, transcontinental Ottoman Empire _ but it was an Empire in decline. The ambitious Italy decided to add to her growing African empire by attacking Ottoman-ruled Tripolitania (Libya). The Italian action began the rapid fall of the Ottoman Empire, which would end with its disintegration at the end of the First World War. The day after Ottoman Turkey made peace with Italy in October 1912, the Balkan League attacked in the First Balkan War. The Italo-Ottoman War, as a prelude to the unprecedented hostilities that would follow, has so many firsts and pointers to the awful future: the first three-dimensional war with aerial reconnaissance and bombing, and the first use of armored vehicles, operating in concert with conventional ground and naval forces; war fever whipped up by the Italian press; military incompetence and stalemate; lessons in how not to fight a guerrilla war; mass death from disease and 10,000 more from reprisals and executions. Thirty thousand men would die in a struggle for what may described as little more than a scatolone di sabbia _ a box of sand. As acclaimed historian Charles Stephenson portrays in this ground-breaking study, if there is an exemplar of the futility of war, this is it. Apart from the loss of life and the huge cost to Italy (much higher than was originally envisaged), the main outcome was to halve the Libyan population through emigration, famine and casualties. The Italo-Ottoman War was a conflict overshadowed by the Great War _ but one which in many ways presaged the horrors to come. A Box of Sand will be of great interest to students of military history and those with an interest in the history of North Africa and the development of technology in war.
